3. Sleep issues - need help (kind of long)
--------------------------------------------------------
wst - 2/28/2015 10:25 am
My twins are about to be 11 months old and up til know
have been pretty good sleepers other than short
regressions here and there. Over the last 10 days
though, my son will not go down unless I rock him to
sleep in my arms and then transfer him into his crib
asleep. Otherwise he just SCREAMS. He is waking up at
night much more often and after a few times, my husband
and I just bring him into bed with us where we all get
some sleep. At first my daughter would sleep through
it, but he's woken her up the last two nights and she's
been so startled that it's taken us an hour to calm her
and get her back down. In the meantime, he goes back to
sleep quickly in the next room in my husband's arms. His
naps have gotten very short now too - he wakes up
screaming and tired after 20 minutes. I am assuming
it's because he fell asleep in my arms and wakes up in
the pack 'n play ( I separate the babes for naps).I
have talked to mom's of singletons who advise trying to
get him down in his crib (letting him scream) and not
in my arms and not letting him sleep with us. The issue
is that if I let him scream his sister gets upset and I
then have not one, but two agitated babies.Any advice
appreciated. I am hoping to ride it out and just let
him sleep with us until he gets over this phase but
concerned that I'm just making things worse.

We just went through something similar with our 21
month olds. My son was sleeping with us, too - after
illnesses, vacations, visitors, regressions, etc. But
it was wearing on us. We used a "chair" method to
start, then we transitioned to the sleep easy solution,
which is a book that we used in the beginning with
sleep training. It was still a tiring path, but worth
it. First night, our goal was to keep him in his crib.
We talked to him before bed about how he was going to
sleep in his own bed that night. When he woke up, We
sat next to him, and just touched him through the crib.
he was VERY upset that night. The next night, he didn't
cry as long, but insisted that we touch his feet or
hold his hands through the crib. We ended up putting a
mattress on the floor next to him. We gradually, over
the course of a week, just comforted him verbally, and
we slept in the room with him next to the crib. After
about 4 or so days of that, we didn't know what to do
next. I referred to my sleep solution book. When he
started crying, we went in, talked to him for 30
seconds about needing to go to sleep, and then we left.
After 5 minutes, we went in for another 30 seconds.
Then 10 minutes of crying, another 30 seconds of
comfort. We also encouraged him to hold Georgie
(Curious George stuffed animal) and read his book, a
touch/feel book with pages he can enjoy in the dark.
The first night of this took a total of 25 minutes. The
second night was 15 minutes. The third night was 5
minutes. As for your daughter, I might suggest that if
you separate for a nap, you may consider separating for
bedtime just until you get through this. I also found a
sleep consultant - "the sleep sisters" and scheduled a
15 minute phone consultation. She gave me the
confidence to know I could get through this too. I hope
this helps a little! Hang in there.
