Celebrate International Day of Happiness on March 20

SF Rec and Park is happy to join a coast-to-coast celebration of International Day
of Happiness on Friday, March 20. In honor of the day, our very own Coit Tower
here in San Francisco, and the Empire State Building in New York will both be lit
yellow to celebrate this new universal holiday and to support the building of a
healthier, happier planet.

Our hope is that lighting the Empire State Building and Coit Tower becomes an annual
tradition in which other cities around the globe can participate, sharing in the
belief that happiness is a cause and a universal right, one which must become a
priority for governments everywhere if we are to evolve into a brighter world.

This Friday, March 20, light up yellow, wear yellow, share yellow. Show us how happy
you feel by sharing a photo of a happy moment in your favorite park with the following
hashtags: #happyday and #sfrecpark.

Rec and Park Celebrates Women's History Month: Bay Sox Set to Make History

March is Women's History Month! Each week this month, we'll highlight some of the
most influential women in history who have had an impact on our city and our parks.
This week, we take a look at some young women who are about to make their own
mark on history as the city's first all-girls baseball team that will travel to
Orlando this summer for America's first national girls baseball tournament. Read
the feature here. Mayor, SF Students Sprint to New Kezar Stadium Track

Mayor Ed Lee, flanked by Supervisors Katy Tang and London Breed; Rec and Park Commissioners
Allan Low and Eric McDonnell; SFUSD board member Hydra Mendoza; and GM Phil Ginsburg,
raced to the finish line with several middle school students at Kezar Stadium on
March 13, celebrating the completion of a recent $3.2 million renovation project
at the historic site. Long used by middle schools, high schools, and amateur and
professional track enthusiasts throughout the year, Kezar has become a runner's
mecca or sorts. The renovation project included the replacement of the running track
surface, new entry walk paving, upgraded sound system, new perimeter walkways and
curbs, the installation of a new Mondo running track surface and striping for nine
42" lanes.
A special thank you goes out to the staff and students from Lawton, Rooftop, Roosevelt
and SF Community schools, as well as the Kezar Stadium Citizen Advisory Committee
for their ongoing leadership.

Oak Woodlands in Golden Gate Park Joins Old-Growth Forest Network

The Oak Woodlands Natural Area in Golden Gate Park received a special designation
on March 14 as it was officially included into the Old-Growth Forest Network. The
mission of the Old-Growth Forest Network (OGFN) [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001utii5mNEL_sxzIDsG9NP5nze6pZJtWYFXoIcHTGsBuSL7rrSyw-eTWko7SjhbVOE2DaJstaHzTVD-UldR7M6AG9R9h3w52UgtybaPpesRt2TMJDWpzOoE0IObQg-yklloRbBwxknuN_dvD8XVAVl0EpgX65mzpnc_CTLnuzy1KjDhltnKR9Jbw==&c=gB51O1s-aM40zW8SPX-pSPJjXndWVMOWfSQkSAEjWC1Nxy875Gi-Pg==&ch=Qwe4OemN6OTcOCz_vLNBpsOjZxh7eD8G-oL8AsAKnogTRAP3Q2SvYw==]
is to connect people with nature by creating a national network of protected, mature,
publicly-accessible, native forests. The goal is to preserve at least one forest
in every county in the United States that can sustain a forest, estimated to be
2,370 out of a total of 3,140 counties.

States that already have forests in the network include New York, Massachusetts,
California, Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Colorado, Hawaii, Michigan,
Virginia and Florida. The Oak Woodlands Natural Area will join previously dedicated
forests in California in the Old-Growth Forest Network. The California representatives
thus far are:

* Humboldt County: Rockefeller Forest - Humboldt Redwoods State Park
* Monterey County: Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park
* Riverside County: Mount San Jacinto State Wilderness - Deer Springs Trail
* San Diego County: Palomar Mountain State Park
* San Mateo County: Sam McDonald County Park - Heritage Grove

Special thanks to the Friends of the Oak Woodlands and our volunteers system-wide,
who each year give more than 185,000 hours of their time and energy to improving
 our parks and programs.

High Water Line Photo Exhibit at the Harvey Milk Center on April 9

Exhibit Reception & Kickoff: April 9, 2015, 6pm-9pm

Closes: May 2, 2015 @ 4:30pm

Gallery Hours: Tues-Thursday: 4pm-8:30pm, Sat & Sunday: 12pm-4:30pm

The Harvey Milk Photo Center, and celebrating our 75th Anniversary this year, and
which is part of the San Francisco Rec & Parks Dept, in San Francisco, is proud
to present "High Water Line- Photographs of the City in the Bay", by Spencer Aldworth
Brown.

Mr. Brown's immersive photographs take the perspective of the water itself. Waves
pull at the coastline, flow under the piers and erode the seawalls built in boom
times a century ago. We see the high waterlines of development and how uses have
slowly changed overtime.

Aquascapes: The Art of Underwater Gardening

Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park

On exhibit now through April 12

Aquascaping, the art of creating stunning underwater landscapes with plants, stones
and wood, is a popular international gardening trend. Annual competitions attract
hundreds of elaborate entries from around the world. The beautifully planted aquariums
can mimic everything from primeval forests to verdant valleys or can become sublime
works of underwater abstract art.
Now, visitors to the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park get a chance to
marvel at this unique form of water gardening and learn how aquatic plants have
adapted to life in the deep. The aquascapes will grow, change and transform throughout
