Conservation Lecture: Wild Places, Wild Things!

Partnering With Local Communities for Conservation of the Endangered Grevy’s Zebra presented by Peter Lalampaa (https://t.e2ma.net/click/8ue3f/o330mu/ory87b) (https://t.e2ma.net/click/8ue3f/o330mu/4jz87b)
Sunday, June 7, from 1-2:30 pm
Osher Great Hall of the Lurie Education Center
The Grevy’s zebra is an exceptional animal, uniquely adapted to survive in the harsh arid and semi-arid climates of northern Kenya and Ethiopia. It once ranged more widely through the Horn of Africa but has since become one of Africa’s most endangered large mammals suffering a global population decline over the last three decades from 15,000 to fewer than 3,000 left in the wild.
In response to this decline, the Grevy’s Zebra Trust was established in 2007 and is an organisation that dedicates 100% of its focus and resources to saving Grevy’s zebra. Peter Lalampaa, Field Director, will talk about the current status of Grevy’s zebra and the innovative efforts being undertaken to enhance its survival in partnership with local communities. GZT’s conservation projects include a unique habitat restoration approach, the employment of community members in monitoring and protecting the zebras and Grevy’s zebra conservation as a platform for peace-building in conflict zones.
Recommended for ages 12 and above. Free admission to lecture.

Red Panda Introductions
(https://t.e2ma.net/click/8ue3f/o330mu/04087b)
We recently acquired a third red panda and its name is "Hunter." Moving towards the goal of exhibiting all three animals begins with the introduction process where all three pandas slowly integrate with one another. To start, animal staff moves the pandas into areas together and watch how they interact and observe the panda-to-panda communication. The goal is to help the animals find their preferred areas where they feel comfortable around one another because natural red panda behavior during off-breeding season is described as solitary. Our pandas can maintain this in our exhibit with all the different places provided.
Fun Facts: Emerald Tree Boas
Emerald tree boas are found in tropical rainforests in the Amazon Basin of South America. They feed on rodents, lizards, frogs, birds, monkeys and bats and have a slow metabolism which enables them to feed infrequently. Size and coloration vary by region, but most are approximately six feet in length. When they are born, babies are reddish in color, turning their distinctive emerald shade between six months and a year. They have large heat receptors which they can use to sense prey and a prehensile tail which they use to secure themselves in a tree, in their distinctive coiled pose. They Zoo's emerald tree boa is currently on display in the Herp Room across from the Mandrill exhibit while he waits for his new home in the Koret-Taube South American Tropical Rainforest and Aviary which opens on June 20
