Youth Stewardship Program Kicks Off
The department's Youth Stewardship Program partners with San Francisco teachers 
to offer free, hands-on environmental education and service learning field trips
 for youth.  This year's program kicks off on October 22, 4-6 p.m., at the EcoCenter
at Heron's Head Park (Port of San Francisco), located at Cargo Way and Jennings

Community Meeting on Lake Merced West on October 21

Centennial of Fine Arts Preservation Day on October 16
Panama Pacific International Exposition 100th Anniversary
Celebrate the Centennial of Palace Preservation Day on Friday, October 16th with
 a day of music and lectures at the Palace of Fine Arts.
The California Historical Society, in partnership with the Maybeck Foundation, presents
the Centennial of Fine Arts Preservation Day! On this day in 1915 Phoebe Hearst 
and the Exposition Preservation League raised funds to save the Palace of Fine Arts
after the fair. To honor the importance of this day, visit the Palace of Fine Arts
at noon next Friday for free jazz and lectures by Palace scholars, including Dr.
 Gray Brechin and Victoria Kaster.

Explore nature, enliven your spirit, and bring a smile to share with new friends!
The hike starts with light stretching, followed by a guided walk through groves 
of redwoods and cypress trees. Meet by the McLaren Park sign and let's get out and

The Storied Houses of Alamo Square Tour on October 18
The Victorian Alliance Fall House Tour
Sunday, October 18, from 1 to 5 p.m.
The Victorian Alliance of San Francisco is pleased to announce its 43rd Annual House
Tour. Splendid interiors of eight exceptional residences and a landmarked church
 will be open to guests on our self-guided walking tour of the Alamo Square Neighborhood,
still home to San Francisco's largest collection of preserved Victorians.
Visit Italianate, Queen Anne, and San Francisco Stick style homes, including a beautifully
restored Painted Lady of Postcard Row. Docents will be on hand to provide historical
background on the architects, contractors, craftsmen and the families who settled
there, and complimentary light refreshments will be served.
Prices for the tour range from $40 to $55. Discounts are available for Victorian
 Alliance members, groups of 10 or more, and for purchases made before October 10.

On October 24, nine of our 37 community gardens, as well as Alemany Farm at St. 
Mary'sPlayground, will be open to the public for enjoyment, education and to celebrate
theseunique green spaces!
Our gardens are volunteer-run (over 1,700 participants and counting!) under the 
umbrellaof Rec and Park's Community Gardens Program, which is a component of the
 citywide Urban Agriculture Program.
Join a bicycle tour of some of the gardens with the SF Urban Agriculture Alliance
starting at 10:30 a.m. or create your own biking/walking/transit/driving tour. Visit
