Join Us for a Leadership Conversation on Green Infrastructure on December 9
The California Coastal Conservancy, The Trust for Public Land, Save the Bay, San
 Francisco Estuary Partnership, East Bay Regional Park District, and the San Francisco
Recreation and Park Department are convening a regional leadership conversation 
on multiple-benefit green infrastructure.
December 9, 2016

The half-day event will begin with a Mayor's Breakfast highlighting innovative models
around the Bay Area and sharing opportunities to further integrate green infrastructure
into planning and development. Following the breakfast, national and regional green
infrastructure experts, state and local policymakers, practitioners, and community
leaders will convene to share case studies, discuss barriers and opportunities, 
and develop strategies for expanding implementation of green infrastructure in the
Bay Area.
Green infrastructure is a critical strategy for adapting to the impacts of climate
change, protecting air and water resources, creating mobility options, and improving
social cohesion and public health. As our region plans to accommodate a growing 
population, it is critical to re-envision the role of infrastructure in our communities
to serve multiple functions and ensure equitable development.

Urban Agriculture/Community Garden Resource Day on December 11
We're excited to announce the relaunch of Urban Agriculture Resource Centers! Please
join us on Sunday, December 11, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Golden Gate Park CommUNITY
Garden (780 Frederick Street).
Materials will be available to any gardener looking to green and beautify the city.
Compost is provided by Recology, and mulch and soil provided by SF Rec and Park.
 Limited amounts will be available per person. BYOB (Bring Your Own Bucket)
We're also hosting a special "Ask an Expert" workshop in partnership with the San
Francisco Department of the Environment, Garden for the Environment, and the University
of California Agriculture Cooperative Extension. The topic of this workshop will
 be Compost, and many experts will be on hand to answer your questions.

The Holidays Have Officially Begun
Thanks to everyone who came out to McLaren Lodge in Golden Gate Park on December
 1 to help celebrate the start of the holiday season by lighting the City's official
holiday tree. For the 87th year running, Rec and Park welcomed hundreds of kids 
and their families for sledding, cookie decoration, caroling, live entertainment
 and, of course, a visit with Santa. This year's honored guests were members of 
the San Francisco Fire Department, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year.

Hilltop Park Now Open!
Hilltop Park in the Bayview reopened this past Saturday after undergoing a $6.7 
million renovation, thanks to a partnership between The Trust for Public Land and
Rec and Park.
The project was primarily funded by Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization
Act of 2008 (AB 31) funds. The improvements are part of Rec & Park's overall efforts
to improve green and open spaces in San Francisco's underserved communities.
Improvements included an expansion and upgrade to The Dish, the oldest skatepark
 in San Francisco, from a simple circular bowl to a state-of-the-art design with
 challenging elements. Additions to the park include a new playground, a picnic 
area with a barbeque, an adult fitness area, a neighborhood trail, improved accessible
pathways, and seating throughout the park. There is also be an improved main lawn,
an improved sundial plaza with a community performance area, vegetated swales for
water infiltration, new lighting for improved visibility, and a new entryway and
 seating area.

and Supervisor Scott Wiener; Assemblymembers David Chiu and Eduardo Garcia; Supervisor
Malia Cohen; and numerous state and local community leaders.

"San Francisco's Franklin Square field is open again after a four-month facelift.
The synthetic turf field was originally completed in 2003 but needed repairs after
13 years of heavy usage. The scope of work included the removal and recycling of

Red Umbrellas at Alvord Lake Through December

Innovation Hangar Gingerbread Build at the Palace of Fine Arts on December 15
Come by the Innovation Hangar (3601 Lyon Street) at the Palace of Fine Arts to build

Holiday Ice Rink at Union Square Open Now!
The Safeway Holiday Ice Rink in Union Square, presented by Alaska Airlines, a San
Francisco holiday tradition, is open! The rink will remain open through Monday,

San Francisco Marina Small Craft Harbor Holiday Event on December 16
Join the SF Marina Small Craft Harbor for their holiday event on Friday, December
16 from 4 - 7 p.m. The event will feature a lighted boat parade, live music, rock

Tenderloin Street Soccer Fest on December 17
Street Soccer USA is teaming up with community based organizations and after-school
programs in the Tenderloin Neighborhood of San Francisco for a Street Soccer Tournament!
It will occur on December 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Tenderloin Rec Center/Children's
Playground.

Women's Pickup Basketball Every Tuesday Evening at Eureka Valley Rec
If you've been meaning to break out the high-tops, here's your chance! Eureka Valley
Recreation Center (19th and Collingwood streets) hosts women's pickup basketball
 every Tuesday evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. All skill levels welcome. Bring your

Butterflies & Blooms at the Conservatory of Flowers Now Open
Get eye to eye with a butterfly in the exhibit Butterflies & Blooms, coming to the
Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park this fall. The popular exhibit returns
by overwhelming demand to San Francisco's beloved Victorian greenhouse, transforming
its Special Exhibit gallery into a beautiful and intimate cottage garden aflutter
with hundreds of butterflies on the wing including magnificent monarchs, western
 swallowtails, painted ladies and more. Walk among a wide variety of brightly colored
blossoms like zinnias and daisies while free-flying butterflies flit from flower
 to flower, drinking nectar and getting covered in pollen.
The exhibit will be featured through June 30, 2017. And anyone can become a member
of the Butterfly Patrol for just a $20 donation to learn how to release a newly 
emerged butterfly into the exhibit. Patrol members receive complimentary people-sized
antennae and a special badge to take home.
