2015 Community Report
To our Fellow Park Supporters:
Happy 2016! As we look ahead to another exciting year at the San Francisco Recreation
and Park Department, we want to share with you some of our 2015 highlights in our
Community Report [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001ky_sfZJPfux1-9pMmDmi6BGMYq-oXTJMzjX2mr-oFSH11LE20G-THsd0jbvljk1S3alWYyRXtnC4HHQtJgLe-LRrvGVT8qDbOOZdqj3SQw-LgZQt5XxIbIpZpJdD2GUR7XOHEL_VWZ-m80gvIHuPFcyR4_o9xwVy5rOyBF19-0A=&c=UCud6i1WsXWR8tL5TzrU0Dp7j4o24bqcMgLHk47DM-LKV4cYhyn8Ww==&ch=kmrDHOkISu4RZJuly4klGTBW_CrXL1VIzVEr66oUiHeERHZCThSpag==].
These achievements aren't solely ours. Your ongoing support of our parks, our staff
and our department is a huge reason behind our success. We thank you for continuing
to love your parks. We couldn't have done it without you.
In the spirit of the new year, let's all resolve to get out and play in 2016!

Ground Broken on the New Noe Valley Town Square
Despite the recent rains, a little bit of sunny news came out of Noe Valley on January
5 as we broke ground on the new Noe Valley Town Square, a recently acquired former
parking lot at 24th and Sanchez streets. The proposal to establish a public open
space at the site has evolved through more than five years of collaboration between
Rec & Park, the community group Residents for Noe Valley Town Square, Supervisor
Scott Wiener, and the San Francisco Parks Alliance.
In June 2013, Supervisor Wiener authored legislation to utilize $2.4 million of
the City's Open Space Acquisition Fund that led to the purchase of the Town Square
by SF Rec & Park. In order to meet the growing need for open space in San Francisco,
SF Rec & Park continues to work to acquire new parks. Thank you to Democratic House
Leader Nancy Pelosi for being a champion of a fully-funded Land and Water Conservation
Fund.

India Basin Design Competition
India Basin is a unique San Francisco treasure. As one of the city's last remaining
natural wetlands, it is critical habitat for a variety of native species. Its adjacent
neighborhoods are home to a diverse and rapidly growing population of residents.
Once the site of boat building and ship repair, restoration began at India Basin
in 2000. A Design Competition for two properties along the India Basin Shoreline,
900 Innes and India Basin Shoreline Park, is being led by the San Francisco Recreation
and Parks Department and the Trust for Public Land, sponsored by Build Inc., and
in partnership with SFPA. Following a public RFI process, five internationally
renowned design teams were selected to develop visions for this 8-acre site.
Finalists include:
- AECOM
- Gustafson Guthrie Nichol
- Surface Design and Aidlin Darling Design
- SWA and Stanley Saitowitz/Natoma Architects
- Tom Leader Studio
The finalists submissions will be available to view online at ibwaterfrontparks.com

Richmond Playground's New Nature Playground
Notice anything naturally different about Richmond Playground lately? Due to the
deterioration of the park's original play structure, Rec and Park recently installed
a new nature playground that consists of natural elements such as big logs and landscape
boulders, all repurposed items from our parks.
Richmond Playground is one of 13 playgrounds prioritized for renovation by a Playgrounds
Task Force made up of representatives from the Recreation and Park Commission, children's
advocacy groups, citywide open space organizations and non-profit partners.
To complement funds in the 2012 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond, Rec and
Park has teamed up with its philanthropic partner, the San Francisco Parks Alliance,
to raise additional funds to renovate all 13 playgrounds. To learn more about the
Playgrounds Campaign or to get involved in supporting Richmond Playground and other
city playgrounds, please contact our Partnerships Division atRecParkPartnerships at sfgov.org
