Message from the President
Happy “Zoo” Year! The new year has plenty in store for the San Francisco Zoo and Gardens. While we continue our mission to connect people with wildlife, I would like to take a moment to thank you for all of the tremendous successes we experienced in 2015. First, we opened the South American Tropical Rainforest and Aviary with great fanfare. It's an amazing exhibit and a great space for visitors to learn about the plight of the rainforest. Plus, it represents the Zoo’s first significant herpetological collection! Secondly, we opened the Sculpture Learning Plaza where children of all ages and abilities can learn about species not exhibited at the Zoo. As we move forward in 2016, we continue to support the elimination of ivory trading as well as encourage healthy eating habits that support wildlife (see more below about Meatless Mondays!). You can read about other successes in 2015 as well as our upcoming projects for 2016 in the current Annual Report (https://t.e2ma.net/click/wd13h/o330mu/4rtpnc). Thank you again for your support of the Zoo!

MLK Day of Service
(https://t.e2ma.net/click/wd13h/o330mu/kkupnc)
In anticipation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service this weekend, the Zoo will join Supervisor Norman Yee’s District 7 Youth Council to host a donation drive in support of the residents of Mercy Housing at 1100 Ocean Avenue. The young people who live at Mercy Housing have lived in foster care and are in the process of transitioning into young adulthood. They are in need of the most basic supplies and we hope that you can help! Please consider donating new, unused items, ranging from school supplies to hygiene products, this Saturday, Sunday and Monday to receive $1 off Zoo admission! Click here (https://t.e2ma.net/click/wd13h/o330mu/0cvpnc) to learn more about what supplies are needed.
Norm of the North Giving FREE Admission for First 100 Kids This Sunday!
Thanks to our friends at Lionsgate, the first 100 kids (ages 4-14) who come to the Zoo this Sunday will receive a complimentary ticket to the Zoo. Make sure to stop by the Lionsgate tent near the front entrance then head straight to Bear Country to see Uulu, our polar bear, and learn about the plight these majestic animals are facing in the wild, not unlike Norm in the movie! Lastly, check out the film opening this weekend.
Meatless Monday
This year we are embracing a movement called Meatless Monday, a public awareness campaign to encourage all Americans to swap out one meat based meal once a week for a vegetarian option. Why embrace this? Well, according to the United Nations, if all Americans replaced just one meat meal each week for a vegetarian meal, 1.4 billion animals would be saved from being factory farmed. Plus, the environmental impact would be the equivalent of taking 1.5 million cars off the road. Also, there are physical health benefits. According to the Humane Society, people who eat fewer animals products have lower rates of obesity, dementia, arthritis, high blood pressure and other serious medical conditions. Join us in 2016 to be healthier, more mindful of the environment and chow down for Meatless Monday. Don't forget the Leaping Lemur Cafe has a wide variety of meatless options perfect for your next "Monday" visit to the Zoo! The San Francisco Zoo congratulates the Guinasso family on winning our Behind-the-Scenes membership raffle! Brian and Jennifer have been San Francisco Zoo Members since 2010 and came by to feed some of our giraffes last year.
“We love bringing our kids to the San Francisco Zoo. It’s their favorite place to go in the city.” –Jennifer Guinasso
Don’t miss our next Members’ Morning (https://t.e2ma.net/click/wd13h/o330mu/0g2pnc) on January 16 for your chance to win a Behind-the-Scenes encounter here at the San Francisco Zoo.
Monarch Society
The first step toward wildlife conservation happens right here at the Zoo. It’s the inspiration and connection with wildlife that visitors and schoolchildren experience which makes a real difference. Through these animal encounters we continue to inspire public support for conservation – building the next generation of environmental stewards which will be so critical to our future. The Monarch Society was established to recognize and honor individuals who have included the San Francisco Zoological Society in their estate plans. As a caring supporter of the San Francisco Zoo, you’ve already demonstrated your dedication to making wildlife connections that inspire people to care for nature and take conservation action. A bequest to the Zoo enables our naturalistic animal settings, educational outreach and conservation programs to continue in perpetuity. What better gift can we give to the next generation than a passion for animals and commitment to caring for the natural world?
