1. Good place to try double strollers?

Hello moms!I am expecting twins in February and would
like to try out some double strollers before buying one
sight-unseen. Does anyone have a recommendation for a
store that has a few double stroller options I can try
out in-person?Now that CitiKids and Lullaby Lane have
gone out of business, I'm not sure which brick & mortar
 stores have a good selection. Sincerely,Susan Z.

Hi Shannon! Rates for nannies are all over the place.
It depends partly on their experience, their
communication abilities (do they speak English well?),
whether they drive or not, etc., and then it depends
partly on just the person. Some nannies ask for a LOT,
regardless of experience, and some don't. In general,
you will pay more if you're paying above the table
(meaning you withhold and pay taxes). Because the nanny
is also paying taxes, their take home is less, so they
will generally ask for more. I've also found that the
majority of nannies (although certainly not all) prefer
under the table (no taxes withheld, no income reported)
so if you want to do it over the table, your pool of
potential candidates may be smaller. Very broadly, I'd
say the rate for a nanny for two kids ranges from
$20-$30/hour. Again, more experience, better English
skills, driving, and paying over the table will all
drive up the cost. As far as whether to pay over or
under the table, that's really a personal choice for
you and the nanny. The bottom line is that it's illegal
not to pay taxes and report their income. You are
facilitating their dodging income taxes, and you are
failing to pay employer taxes. If it's found out, you
would owe penalties and back taxes. But I've never
actually met someone who was found out. It happens, I
know, but I think it's pretty rare. The nanny could
turn you in, but then she'd have to also pay penalties
and back taxes, so it's not in either of your best
interests to report the income after the fact.If you
pay above the table, the nanny will be eligible for
unemployment, social security, etc. (That's an
advantage for her, though, not for you.)The advantages
to paying under the table is savings (and streamlining
the process - taxes can be complicated!) You can pay
the nanny less, and you don't have to pay employer
taxes. If your company offers an FSA for childcare, you
can pay some of the nanny's salary with pre tax
dollars. The federal max is $5,000, which is a joke
when you're talking about a full time nanny (and the
rate has not been increased in 30 years! It makes me
so mad) but it does go a ways toward offset the extra
cost of paying above the table. (But only for you, not
for the nanny.)If you have strong feelings about paying
above the table, you should make it clear when
interviewing, because some nannies won't be interested
(either don't want to pay taxes, or may not be legally
allowed to work).Good luck! With the babies, with
finding a nanny... with the next few months!
