A Message Regarding Proposition B
Dear friends,
Last night, San Francisco voters scored a big victory for parks. Approved by over
60% of the vote, Proposition B amends our City Charter to extend an existing set
aside until 2046 and gives our Department a funding baseline that increases each
year for 30 years. Prop B protects parks from future recession-driven cuts and guarantees
a minimum of $15m a year to address deferred maintenance through the City's General
Fund capital plan. Significantly, the measure also calls upon us to develop equity
metrics and apply the analysis to our five-year strategic plan and our annual capital
and operations plans.
This is a big deal for our park system. It won't solve our deferred maintenance
challenges or our staffing shortages overnight, but Prop B delivers financial sustainability
and predictability for our park system. Over time, we will be able to better address
nuts and bolts park issues like broken playground equipment and damaged irrigation
systems that have long faced our department. Slowly and incrementally, we'll be
able to hire more staff and provide more resources to employees. And ultimately,
we'll be able to provide better, cleaner, safer parks to communities all across
the city.
We have a number of people to thank for this victory. Like our beloved Golden State
Warriors, who have captivated the world with their teamwork and selflessness, the
success of Proposition B demonstrates "strength in numbers," requiring the effort
of many individuals working together towards a common goal.
* Our Mayor, Ed Lee, whom without his support, there would have been no Proposition
B
* Our champion on the Board of Supervisors, Mark Farrell, and his colleagues who
voted to place Proposition B on the ballot
* The San Francisco Parks Alliance, which provided incredible leadership, advocacy,
policy guidance, resources, and partnership
* The many employee organizations that supported the measure, led by Laborers Local
261
* Members of the San Francisco Unified School Board and Superintendent Carranza,
our many "friends-of" groups, park partners and community-based organizations,
who continue to fight for equitable and sustainable resources for all of our neighborhoods
* Our employees, who work in our parks each and every day
* And especially San Francisco voters who continue to demonstrate that parks matter
by supporting this measure and the parks bond measures in 2008 and 2012
We thank all of you for continuing to love your parks.
Cheers,
Phil Ginsburg, General Manager
San Francisco Recreation and Parks

Hoodline: Bayview's New and Improved Gilman Playground Debuts
Just in time for summer, the San Francisco Recreation & Park Department celebrated
the opening of Gilman Playground (on June 3) after a $1.8 million renovation. This
renovation was made possible by the 2012 Clean & Safe Neighborhood Park bond, which
gave SF Rec and Park $195 million to execute capital projects for the renewal and
repair of San Francisco's parks, recreation, and open space assets. Read the entire
