Message from the President

With great pride, I announce that the San Francisco Zoo & Gardens recently received its five-year accreditation by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA), a distinction which is only awarded to the top zoos and aquariums in the world by experts in the field. This also marks the occasion of the SF Zoo being awarded the AZA’s “Quarter Century Award,” a new distinction created this year to recognize 25 years or more of continuous accreditation.  The SF Zoo first received accreditation in 1977, and is one of the only Zoos in the country to have been continually accredited since then.

All of us here on the board and staff of the San Francisco Zoo and Gardens want to thank our  partners, docents, donors and volunteers for helping us achieving this remarkable milestone. We all know what a special place our Zoo is because it allows people to care for and connect with wildlife, which then inspires conservation action, but AZA accreditation is meaningful because it confirms in an independent and objective manner our dedication and commitment to excellence.

To be accredited, the SF Zoo underwent a thorough review to ensure it has and will continue to meet ever-rising standards, which include animal care, veterinary programs, conservation, education and safety. AZA requires zoos and aquariums to successfully complete this rigorous accreditation process every five years in order to be members of the Association.

Warmly,

Tanya Peterson

President and CEO

Sea Otter Soiree

The Zoo is partnering with Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary to present a Sea Otter Soirée (https://t.e2ma.net/click/867pi/o330mu/0s75sc): Why We Need Sea Otters More Than They Need Us. It will be a sophisticated evening reception mingling science and art to highlight one of our coast's most charismatic species on Saturday, April 2 from 7-9:30 pm. This intriguing and thought-provoking presentation by sea otter biologist Tim Tinker, Ph. D. of the U.S. Geological Survey, demonstrates how sea otters can help restore the health of nearshore ecosystems, often in unexpected ways. Click here (https://t.e2ma.net/click/867pi/o330mu/gl85sc) to purchase tickets and read more information about the event. The event is free for Zoo Guardians only.

Andean Cat Conservation Lecture

Learn about the biology and ecology of the Andean cat at the "Saving the Soul of the Andes" conservation lecture on Wednesday, April 6 in the Osher Great Hall inside the Lurie Education Center at 1:00 pm. Rocio Palacios of Andean Cat Alliance will be visiting the Zoo to present current threats to survival and solutions for long-term protection. Additionally, she'll share ongoing efforts in education, research and community outreach programs throughout the Andean Cat range (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Peru) and why she has hope for this beautiful species. The talk is free and open to the public, ages 12 and above recommended. Click here (https://t.e2ma.net/click/867pi/o330mu/c695sc) or call 415-753-7073 for more information.

Get Ready for ZooFest 2016

The Zoo’s signature fundraising event (https://t.e2ma.net/click/867pi/o330mu/8qb6sc) on April 30 is set to be the best one yet!  We’re paying tribute to the 40th Anniversary of the Zoo’s groundbreaking Nature Trail, a pioneering educational program which teaches young people to be wildlife conservation ambassadors to the nearly 1 million visitors who come to the Zoo each year. Plus, we are thrilled that lifelong conservation advocate Senator Dianne Feinstein will be our honored guest and Dot Marie Jones of TV’s “Glee” will serve as hostess and emcee. Some of the many live auction items include naming rights for the lion cub, Andean condor and three Mexican wolves as well as a Giants package that includes four tickets to an away game, airfare and hotel accommodations. ZooFest runs from 6-9:00 pm on Saturday, April 30 at the Zoo. For tickets or sponsorship information, please contact Margaret Stangl. The ZooFest Benefactor Party is Wednesday, April 6 from 6-8:00 pm at Ghurka (https://t.e2ma.net/click/867pi/o330mu/ojc6sc) (245 Post Street in San Francisco). Additionally, anyone who shops in person at the Ghurka store between now and April 30th will have 20% of their entire purchase donated back to the Zoo. For more information, call 415-753-7173 x9.
