Gilman Playground Reopens June 3
Join us on Friday, June 3, at 3 p.m., for a celebration event marking the completion
of a $1.8 million renovation of Gilman Playground in the Bayview neighborhood, thanks
to the 2012 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond. The renovation project included
a complete overhaul of the children's play area, restroom improvements, pathway 
upgrades and the installation of Greenfields outdoor exercise equipment. The event
will include a brief ceremony, followed by kids activities, sports, arts and crafts,
and the Mobile Rec climbing wall.

Blue at the Zoo
Come out to the San Francisco Zoo on Saturday, June 4, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., to
meet local wildlife and your SF Police Department officers. They'll have their mounted
unit on site, as well as motorcycle officers, giveaways for kids and the special
 quadski vehicle out for folks to see. Free with regular zoo admission.

KALW Radio: The Golden-Hearted Referee
It's the final game of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department's Junior
 Warriors 8th grade girls basketball league. The SOMA Stars and the Lady Hurricanes
take their positions on the court. A tall, wiry man - the referee - steps to the
 center. He looks at all the girls, smiles, and tosses the ball straight up in the
air. Two girls jump for it, and the game is on.
This isn't where Cardell Butler expected to be right now, shortly before his 35th
birthday. He could have been playing pro ball before thousands of fans in Europe,
or the NBA's developmental league. Maybe still could.
"I still can play at a high level," he says. "I still can play NBA professional 
basketball."
Instead he's here, at St. Mary's Rec Center in Bernal Heights. This is the fourth
championship game in a row Cardell has refereed, today. The youngest kids started
at 9 a.m. Now it's 3 p.m., and Cardell hasn't had lunch. That's all right. This

Statement on Dolores Park Permits
May 6th marked the 81st anniversary of the enactment of the Works Progress Administration
(WPA), one of the most successful public works programs in our nation's history.
 Its main purpose was to put Americans back to work by boosting infrastructure while
also promoting scientific and artistic projects. In San Francisco, the Recreation
and Park Department was one of the biggest benefactors as many parks were either
 improved upon or built from scratch. One example is Gilman Playground, which is
 currently undergoing renovation and is slated to reopen on June 3rd with a community
celebration. more than $2300 to help support playgrounds and other amenities in the park. Volunteers
and organizers, including Chuck and Trilce Farrugia, showed up at Louis Sutter Playground
at 7 a.m. to get the stove and griddle going. Rec and Park GM Phil Ginsburg was 
also on hand to offer up his extensive kitchen skills.

Free Guided Trail Walk with Healthy Parks, Healthy People on May 28
Herons Head Park, Jennings Street off Cargo Way
