So what is what is Coastal Clean-up Day?
Every year, on the third Saturday in September, people come together to take part
in California's largest volunteer event, Coastal Cleanup Day. Saturday, September
19, 2015 was no different - more than 68,000 people removed 1,142,997 pounds of
trash and recyclable material from California's coast and inland waterways. Garbage
can come from our homes, walkways, and streets, and travels through storm drains
or other channels to reach the sea. This was the largest Cleanup - geographically
- that the Commission has ever held, with more than 900 sites located in 54 counties
across the state.
To register and support San Francisco Recreation and Parks efforts in this state
wide event, please click on one of the links above to register. All volunteers
are encouraged bring their own gloves, bags/buckets and water bottle to reduce waste
outflow. However, if needed, we will provide the necessary materials to volunteers.

Community Celebrates Newly Resurfaced Hoops Courts at the Panhandle
The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, in partnership with the Golden
State Warriors Community Foundation and Good Tidings Foundation, reopened the Nate
Thurmond Panhandle Basketball Courts on September 10 after court resurfacing generously
funded by the Warriors and Good Tidings.
The courts were originally renovated in 2000, also in partnership with the Warriors
and Good Tidings, and dedicated in honor of legendary Warriors player Nate Thurmond,
who passed away this summer.
Over the years, the courts have seen incredible popularity and were in need of repairs.
A ceremonial tip-off marked the opening. Senator Mark Leno, District 5 Supervisor
and Board President London Breed, former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, Rec &
Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg, members of the Good Tidings Foundation and
sports personalities Jim Barnett and Larry Beil were also on hand.
Beyond his accomplishments as one of the best centers to play in the NBA, Thurmond
was a longtime community ambassador for both the Warriors and Good Tidings.

The Mission Continues at McLaren Park
On September 10, veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces affiliated with the non-profit
community service organization, The Mission Continues, and their family members
performed a day of volunteer service at John McLaren Playground in commemoration
of the tragic events of 9/11. Working alongside park gardeners, volunteers sanitized
playground equipment, picked up litter and refreshed the ornamental planting beds
along Burrows Street. The group pulled out a truckload of green waste during the
weeding of planting beds, and afterwards hauled three truckloads of wood chips in
wheelbarrows and spread this ground cover in the ornamental beds to support native
CA drought-tolerant plants. As a perfect end to a successful volunteer day, the
group enjoyed a relaxing picnic at the Upper Reservoir in celebration of their
transformation of John McLaren Playground.

The Wild Bunch: Succulents, Cacti and Fat Plants
At the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park through October 16
This summer, the Conservatory of Flowers gets rough and tumble as it continues to
celebrate some of the more ornery gangs of the plant world in a new exhibition.
Set amongst the rusty remnants of an old ghost town, The Wild Bunch, on view through
October 16, explores the strange and dramatic world of water hoarding plants, bristling
with living examples of cacti, fat plants (also known as caudiciforms) and other
succulents. These fleshy, and often thorny, plants are distinguished for their
ability to survive the most extreme, arid conditions, and their swollen stems and
leaves come in a stunning variety of weird shapes and unexpected colors. Click here
