1. Invitation & RSVP: Preschool, Kinder and Beyond: SFUSD
Primer for Twins
--------------------------------------------------------
lwallace2011 - 9/21/2016 8:00 pm

Public schools in SF...it's such a scary topic. But it
shouldn't be! We actually have some fantastic choices!!
Yes, it's a bit of a nightmare trying to wrap your arms
around it, but once you do (and it only takes a little
bit of time to do that), you'll see that it's a pretty
good process for a difficult situation (situation being
too many students with only a handful of "great"
schools and people simply not being aware that there
are a lot of "very good" schools). We will try to shed
some light on the process: the speaker will be a twin
mom who has just gone through the process, with 2
backup singers (also twin moms who have just gone
through the process and are eagerly awaiting the
Kindergarten start date of 8/15!).Topics will include:-
Primer on public Elementary Schools in SF- Brief
comments about the process for private and charter
schools - Specific considerations when applying with
twins!- We'll have a big map with assignment areas, so
you can quickly see where your AA school is. - What
you'll get out of school tours- Discussion about some
schools specifically - subjective feedback based on
last year's tours - Discussion about "wait lists" and a
sample current set of wait lists- Discussion about
considerations for kids with special needs (Only if you
indicate in your RSVP note that you are interested.
Otherwise we will skip)About a week before the event, I
will contact the attendees to ask if they have a list
of schools they're particularly interested in. I know
it's still a bit early now...This event is open to
members and non-members! If you know a twin parent who
might be interested in this topic, but is not a member,
please let them (and me) know. We would love them to
 join.Event Details & RSVP---------------------- What:

2. Reminder: New & Expectant Parents Group - Daytime
Meeting
--------------------------------------------------------
emilee_sf - 9/21/2016 1:00 pm

Daytime meetings are held the 4th Thursday of each
month, from 1-2:30pm. Meetings are held at Calvary
Presbyterian Church at 2515 Fillmore Street (between
Pacific and Jackson). Enter the church to the right of
the main entrance with all the stairs, which has a ramp
that will lead to double doors. Enter and you'll see an
elevator straight ahead. Take the elevator to the 3rd
floor, exit and walk all the way back past the
bathrooms to the Nursery.Parking: There is 2-hour
street parking on neighboring streets and metered
parking on Fillmore (hit or miss, but I can usually
find a spot within 10 minutes). There is a parking
garage (CPMC garage) on Clay between Webster and
Buchanan in case you can't find parking elsewhere. It's
a few blocks away but it's an option. We welcome all
expecting and new parents with multiples under one year
of age. Come alone, with your partner, and/or your
babies. You may also bring the helping hands of
friends, nannies, and grandparents. Should you run out
of helping hands we have many more ready to help out.
The New and Expectant Parents Group is an ideal place
to gain invaluable twin parenting advice, an
opportunity to ask many questions, to see how other
parents cope with more than one baby, a place to laugh,
to cry, to rejoice, and to share proud and scary
moments in our step-by-step journey into parenthood of
multiples. You must be a member to attend regularly.
Prospective members may attend one meeting before
joining. You can contact the moderator at

and makes it clear to all prospective, new, and
existing members where that platform and the ensuing
 discussion actually occur).Word-of-mouth and referral
are your strongest advocates in steering parents to
your group; it's how I found you, and I've in-turn
referred others. I should pass on to you that I've
heard from 2-3 prospective moms of twins that they find
the membership cost too high for their budgets,
however. Based on this anecdotal feedback, I would
suggest an annual membership fee of $50-$60 if the
group can afford to do that.

 1. Consigment sale: I only participated in the last one
due to my recent membership and I was a bit
disappointed. I had attended to the one that the East
Bay parents of multiples association runs in Berkeley,
that felt to me at that point bigger and more popular.
I guess I was expecting something like it and found
ours pretty small in comparison, specially taken into
account all the effort I am sure goes into the event
organization, which by the way, I thought it was
excellent. I wonder in what way we could have more
people participating, because I think it an event that
would help many families. I would be sad to see the
event goes but I would understand it if the
participation is low. 2. Wedsite: I dislike Big Tent, I
find it confusing and difficult to navigate so I moved
to Facebook as soon as I had the opportunity. Although
I agree with the previous comment regarding the "paying
to join a private FB group" I think it would be very
difficult at this point go back and stop FB use. I
honestly do not know what the solution would be and
even doubt that a new more friendly website can take
over the FB groups at this point. 3. Membership has
helped our family so much that I would strongly
recommend it. But I can understand that there are
families who could not afford it. Maybe a welcome
discount the first year or something like it would help
with new enrollment? And then, hopefully those families
would renew their membership. Lastly I want to thank
the board and volunteers for the work and effort that
they put in the association. My family has certainly
 benefited from it.

In case the board is reading here, I just want to chime
in that I'm also disappointed that nearly all
discussion within SFPOM is on Facebook. This wasn't
made clear upon applying and paying for SFPOM
membership. It wasn't until about 6 months into my
membership that someone wrote a message explaining why
the group seemed so silent and why responses so scarce.
When signing up, I thought the forum on which I was
asked to create an account was the actual forum where
discussion took place. I purposely avoid using FB in
every other aspect of my life. If people are
disappointed with BigTent, I'd recommend SFPOM either
find a more user-friendly, secure host site, and/or
make clear to prospective members that they are paying
to join a private FaceBook group.

BigTent (which is now owned by care.com) used to be the
more active site, but the communications just
organically evolved to Facebook, as it seems more
user-friendly to more members. It was not a conscious
decision - just sort of migrated there, as most people
didn't want to double-post (as many of us did, for a
while). The FB group IS still private, and only for
SFPOM members. However, if you know of other, better
platforms, please feel free to suggest them by private
email to President at sfpom.org and webmaster at sfpom.org.
Thanks for your patience!! We are a completely
volunteer-run club, and always appreciate when members
 can help out!
