Zoo Director’s Note

I thank our wonderful employees and volunteers for participating in SF Zoo & Garden’s Second Annual Coastal Clean-Up at our very own Ocean Beach.  As one of the only zoos in the world with the privilege of being located on an ocean, I strongly feel it’s our responsibility to help preserve and protect the natural habitat that abuts our zoological park.  To that end, we recently opened a temporary coastal conservation “Pop-Up,” an education portal by which we here at SF Zoo can study the biodiversity of our coastline.  This incredible space directly connects our students to the extraordinarily productive marine region just at the Zoo’s edge and encourages students to use science to protect our oceans and coast. Here at SF Zoo, we take great pride in our environment, our neighborhood and the waters adjacent to our Zoo. I am so very grateful to my staff for trying to make a difference.  Together, we can save the world’s wild places and wild things… one “clean-up” at a time!

March of the Penguins
Saturday, July 29
One of our most popular annual events, March of the Penguins (http://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=0166ecb9d8&e=7683a9aed3) , returns this Saturday! Come watch our 5 adorable Magellanic penguin chicks waddle through the Zoo to their new home on Penguin Island. This morning event celebrates the chicks' graduation from “Fish School” where they lose their fluffy down, learn to eat whole fish, swim and accept food from their human keepers. Members can come into the Zoo early at 9:30 am to get a great seat and will have the opportunity to submit a name suggestion in a raffle for one of the chicks! After the ceremony, stay as long as you’d like for the Penguin Party!

Wild Cat Weekend

Bug Fair
Cockroaches and spiders and bees, oh my! Did you know that bugs make up over 80% of the animals on Earth? Come learn about bugs and why they are crucial components of our ecosystems at San Francisco Zoo's Bug Fair (http://sfzoo.us12.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=572783698f&e=7683a9aed3) on August 12 from 10 am - 3 pm.  All activities are free with paid Zoo admission and will take place in front of the Insect Zoo.

Fur Ball

Zoo Crew Orientation
Do you know a budding conservationist between the ages of 11 and 14? As a member of Zoo Crew, teens will work hands-on with rangers and biologists at Lake Merced and Mountain Lake in San Francisco to restore local habitat, learn about our very own wild places and wild things, and get dirty! Join us for our annual orientation on Saturday, August 12th at 10:00am in the Lurie Education Center to learn all about the program and how to apply.
