Black History Month Employee Spotlight: Rec and Parks' Own 49er
The glamour and glitz of Super Bowl LII may be over, but that doesn't mean we aren't
still among greatness. At the Log Cabin in Golden Gate Park, behind an unassuming
desk and on the phone helping to facilitate film permits for the Department, sits
Jim Jackson, longtime Rec and Park employee, esteemed colleague, father, grandfather
and member of the 1966 and '67 San Francisco 49ers.
Everyone has a story about how they ended up at Rec and Park, but few ever start
with catching a 63-yard touchdown pass from legendary 49ers quarterback John Brodie,
which Jim did in 1966 against the Atlanta Falcons. Born and raised in Alton, Ill.,
Jim began playing football in the seventh grade and played collegiately at Western
Illinois University. While on a trip to scout one of Jim's teammates, a 49ers team
official noticed Jim and recommended him to the team. In his two years playing defensive
back and running back for the Niners, Jim had a number of highlights, including
making the team as a rookie, intercepting a pass against the Dallas Cowboys, and
meeting Green Bay Packers Hall-of-Famer Bart Starr in the Kezar Stadium tunnel.
Jim also played a bit of semi-pro ball in San Jose under a young coach by the name
of Bill Walsh.
Jim first joined Rec and Park 39 years ago and has worked as a recreation director,
recreation supervisor, and referee for both basketball and youth football. He retired
in June 2007 and returned five months later on a part-time basis. "My most enjoyable
moments are when I come to work and am surrounded by so many friends/co-workers
who have become my family away from home," said Jim, who has a son Jimmy, daughter
Tippanee and a grandson named Amani.
Thank you for all you have done for our parks, and bringing the 49er pedigree to
the Rec and Park office gridiron!
