Every day is a reason to celebrate the earth at San Francisco Zoo & Gardens, but a special Earth Day celebration will occur April 20 through April 22 with the topic of climate change taking center stage. On Saturday, April 20, local green vendors will be on hand, and through Earth Day, April 22, stroll around the zoo to encounter globes of information on how every Zoo visitor can help save the planet, one action item at a time!
What’s in a Name?! A state flower, for one!

Native to the United States and Mexico, the California poppy is an ornamental plant flowering from spring through summer, with showy cup-shaped flowers in brilliant shades of orange, yellow and red. The petals close at night (or cold windy weather) and open again the following morning. With edible petals, the poppy can be used as food or garnish. It became the official state flower in 1903, and April 6th is designated as “California Poppy Day,” so be sure to enjoy this year’s particularly vibrant bloom. You can find them right here at the San Francisco Zoo and Gardens throughout the property and specifically in our new sensory garden, Gail’s Fragrance Garden, named after longstanding SFZS Docent and Emeritus Board member, Gail Secchia!

Registration for the Spring session of Little Learners and Animal Adventures is now open! You and your little one will both enjoy soaring like eagles, digging like meerkats, and grazing like goats in these early childhood classes.
