									[41] SFUSD superintendent is passionate about black student success. He lived it.

Vincent Matthews has been superintendent of SFUSD for over two years now. His biggest initiative is called “PITCH” and it’s all about boosting academic outcomes for low-income kids of color. Especially African American students. Because as a group they post the lowest math and reading scores. Matthews knows what it’s like to be young and black in public schools here. He’s from San Francisco. In this interview, Matthews drives us around his town to talk about his goals, his passions—and his past.

									[43] SFUSD summer garden program trains teens, lets kids get their hands dirty

Twice a week for six weeks, 13 high school student interns trained in how to teach gardening are dispatched to Flynn, Monroe, Jefferson and Sunset elementary schools for 50 minute sessions aimed at inspiring their younger counterparts to find joy in getting their hands dirty. “I think it’s really important to teach them about the environment. As they grow older, they will be the ones making the impact,” said Maya Cardona, a passionate environmentalist herself who has aspirations of becoming a school teacher.

	[45] Betting on the Bay with Malcolm X Academy

Victor and Naeemah—two fourth graders at Malcolm X Academy in the Bayview—recently presented the results of their class’ work with Y-PLAN (Youth-Plan, Learn, Act Now!), the San Francisco Planning Department, and the San Francisco chapter of the National Association of Minority Architects. This collaborative project aimed to educate the community about the local effects of climate change and sea level rise.

	[47] From Guatemala to a U.S. university: my American Dream

At San Francisco International High School, I discovered a welcoming school community. The teachers were patient, understanding and welcoming. Even those who did not speak Spanish tried to help me as much as they could. Each day, my teachers encouraged me to speak the few English words I had learned the day before. My after-school tutors helped me with assignments. If I became frustrated, they assured me that with time I would succeed.
