A Letter from the Executive Director:
Happy Zoo Year, Ringing in 2020!

90 years is a long time for any institution, and in 2019 we recognized this milestone and celebrated each decade, fast forwarding from the roaring 20's to the progress of today. Times have certainly changed, and as we start an exciting new decade, we can be thankful for all we have accomplished this past year:
* Celebrated our 1,000^th California red-legged frog released in Yosemite National Park;
* Released hundreds of Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frogs and dozens of Western pond turtles to the wild;
* We now have a dynamic group of seven chimpanzees living in the spacious, new Great Ape Passage, which opened this year;
* Welcomed the arrival of two Bornean orangutans; our first orangutans in more than 15 years; a male kudu and male koala; plus Nubian and LaMancha goats and a miniature horse in our Exploration Zone;
* We broke ground on our new snow leopard habitat expansion; and are teaming with Snow Leopard Conservancy on research and conservation initiatives;
* Opened a renovated raptor aviary at the Koret Animal Resource Center;
* Saw the birth of four prairie dog pups, the hatching of five Magellanic penguin chicks, a kudu calf; the Zoo's first ever blue-throated piping guan and a françois’ langur infant, among others;
* Acknowledged the 40^th “bugiversary” of our Insect Zoo;
* And, as one of the most accessible destinations in the Bay Area, nearly 15% of all Zoo admission in 2019 was free, including free admission for hundreds of school groups, charitable organizations and their events, and general visitors throughout the year!

As we look at 2020, it will truly be a year of vision as we move forward with our mission to connect people with animals in new and exciting ways, one of which is an inspiring horse therapy program we are hosting in partnership with the James S. Brady Therapeutic Riding Program. We thank you for your continued support and wish you all a Happy New Year!

Warmly,

Tanya M. Peterson
