A Letter from the Executive Director

January 9, 2019

We are marking a very special milestone this year as it has been 90 amazing years since the San Francisco Zoo & Gardens was first established. The origins of our park from a handful of exotic animals in the burgeoning 1929 San Francisco metropolis to today, as a leading education and conservation organization, has been a true evolution.

The “bear” beginnings was really just that. The San Francisco Zoo began with one man – and one bear. The man was philanthropist Herbert Fleishhacker, and the bear was Monarch, a California grizzly bear who, in 1889, became the first Zoo animal and a lasting symbol of the City’s relationship with vanishing wildlife. Though he never set foot in the Zoo’s current location, Monarch provided the impetus for Fleishhacker to pursue his dream of a City Zoo.

Fast forward to 2019, and the San Francisco Zoo is all grown up. We serve our community, the Bay Area and beyond in ways unimaginable 90 years ago, inspiring and educating children, youths and guests of all ages. We are at the forefront in providing our animals with exemplary care through our animal care and wellness program and are delivering on our pledge to continually update and expand our habitats, working to enrich our animals’ lives.

As such, as a non-profit organization, we need your support, whether it is through your loyal membership or generous donations. Over the 90 year lifespan of our beloved zoo, our animals have been at the heart of our organization and our rich heritage is part of San Francisco’s history.

We look forward to sharing Zoo news with you in 2019. Please join us by visiting as we celebrate our 90th anniversary all year long.

Best,

Tanya M. Peterson
CEO & Executive Director

As we kick off the Zoo's 90th Anniversary in 2019, we are offering 90 cent admission for children under 14 in January. For many children, meeting a giraffe, bear, or lion is the highlight of their year, and we can’t think of a better way to start 2019 than with a Zoo visit!

A male Greater kudu recently arrived from the Indianapolis Zoo on a breeding recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Now that he’s cleared quarantine, he will be slowly introduced to the Savanna exhibit and its other residents over the coming weeks. This photo shows his first adventure in the Savanna. Stay tuned for future updates!
