Dear Kelly,
At this point, the holiday decorations are packed away, the cheery holiday music is gone and many of us are experiencing rain storms, snow storms and increasingly cold temperatures, encouraging us to sleep more, eat more and hibernate. At the same time, your social media news feed is likely packed with ads for the local gym, lists of New Year’s resolutions and images of energetic peers feverously committing to extreme makeovers in their professional and personal lives.
It can be a real rollercoaster of emotions to start the year.
But you don’t have to feel overwhelmed or hopeless. Read below for some surprisingly simple ways to achieve a healthier, happier you this year.
1. Stay positive: Surround yourself with positive, energetic and caring people – and be one yourself. Cheerful people are less likely to get sick. They also live an average of 7.5 years longer. And, do more things that make you happy, more often.
2. Stay active: Research proves that exercise works as an antidepressant, therefore, helping to manage our mood. Regular exercise also lowers the risk of heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, obesity and dementia. If you haven’t already, get into an exercise routine that fits your daily schedule. Aim for some form of exercise at least four times a week.
3. Stay social: Stay connected with old friends and make new ones. Grab a coffee, make a lunch date, pick up the phone or connect with an old friend on Facebook. Having a solid social network impacts us both physically and mentally and studies show connected people live longer.
4. Eat healthy: Maintaining a well-balanced diet helps boost energy while helping us to stay more focused and active, especially during the colder season. A healthy diet can also reduce your risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease and cancer. You’ll feel and look better when you eat more fruits and vegetables, especially the deep-colored and green leafy kind, which contain age-fighting antioxidants.
5. Start a project: Do something you’ve been putting off for a while. It will temporarily distract you from the cold outside while making you feel accomplished. Anything from scrapbooking to cleaning out closets to staring a book club are great ways to kick-start the year and keep you motivated.
Finally, remember, MedicAlert is there for you around the clock so you can enjoy the freedom to live your life to the fullest knowing we have you covered in those moments you can’t control.
