Opening Night is Wednesday, June 5, for Eugene Ionesco’s Rhinoceros, playing at A.C.T.’s (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=1926691e16&e=7683a9aed3) Geary Theater through June 23. As a proud partner of the American Conservatory Theater, SFZS Members receive a 20% discount with the code SFZOO19 (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=3f956f97b0&e=7683a9aed3) and a special discount for same-day tickets for Rhinoceros by showing their membership card. As part of this special partnership, SFZS and A.C.T. have teamed up to bring awareness to the plight of the rhinoceros to new audiences, by introducing them to our very own rhinos, Gauhati and Boone. A special “SF Zoo Day” will occur on Sunday, June 9 at A.C.T.’s Geary Theater that will include a 5-foot rhino standee and three paintings courtesy of Gauhati plus Adopt-A-Rhino packages will be available for sale at the theater’s gift kiosk.

In May, we celebrated the 24th birthday of our greater one-horned rhino, Gauhati, who received extra special browse as well as a "cake" made of his favorite treats: romaine lettuce, dandelion greens, and Swiss chard! Greater one-horned rhinos live in northern India and southern Nepal and are a small ray of sunshine in the otherwise bleak world of rhino conservation. Their numbers are steadying, if not slightly increasing, due to strict protection from the Nepalese and Indian governments.

Unfortunately, in the last century black rhinos, like Boone, have suffered the most drastic decline of the five remaining rhino species and are considered critically endangered. SF Zoo currently manages its black rhinos under the American Zoo and Aquarium Association’s Species Survival Plan (SSP) and we are proud to be home to these magnificent ambassadors!
