Science Saturday: Tiny Birds and Giant Journeys

Join us for the next FREE Science Saturday Conservation Lecture on March 9 in the Osher Great Hall at 1 pm!  Monica Iglecia, Assistant Director of Shorebird Habitat Management, will present "Tiny Birds and Giant Journeys: Shorebird Ecology and Conservation in the Americas," and discuss the amazing ecology of shorebirds, current conservation efforts that benefit these imperiled birds, and how you too can help protect these beautiful animals.  Stay tuned for our next dynamic conservation lecture, free to members and the general public!
St. Patrick's Day Shamrock Stroll

Get your jig on and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 17 in the greenest place in the Bay Area!  Not only do we have 100 acres of green space, dozens of green animals, and a vast portfolio of environmentally conscious programs, we’re also hosting a Shamrock Stroll. Follow along the self-guided tour to find lucky shamrocks featuring fun facts about our animals and get a history lesson about the Irish in our animals!  Guests can get their Irish on and come wearing green!  Enjoy live music and Irish entertainment as well as traditional Irish adult beverages (non-alcoholic also available) at The Shamrock Bar from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. near the Lemur Café.

90th Anniversary Walk Down Memory Lane

For 47 years, the world’s largest swimming pool was located right next to the San Francisco Zoo. Opened in 1925, the Fleishhacker Pool was so large that 24 lifeguards were needed to patrol the 1,000’ x 150’ salt water pool, and they had to use rowboats to make their way across! The pool was generally heated to 70 degrees, had a capacity of six million gallons and could accommodate 10,000 swimmers. The pool was even used by the military for drills and by water polo, swimming and diving teams for competitions. By 1971, the pool had deteriorated beyond repair and was later filled in before opening as a new parking lot adjacent to the Zoo’s current entrance.
