Introducing Our New Male Sumatran Tiger!

A couple of weeks ago, our new 13-year-old Sumatran tiger started exploring his new outdoor habitat for the first time. Though hesitant at first, he acclimated quickly and spent the day outdoors, chomping on grass, dozing off and checking out his new home, including his new neighbors, a pair of bongos and a black rhinoceros. He was transferred to SF Zoo recently from the San Diego Wild Animal Park, on the recommendation of the Association of Zoo and Aquarium’s Species Survival Plan (SSP), which manages populations of endangered species living under human care in accredited zoological parks, to ensure genetic diversity and sustainable populations. This male tiger is known for his easy-going personality and mellow disposition. As a proven breeder, he will eventually be paired with the SF Zoo’s six-year-old female Sumatran tiger. Sumatran tigers are one of the world’s most critically endangered tiger subspecies, with fewer than 400 wild tigers left in the wild. Come out to see
him at his new home in Cat Kingdom!
