Grizzly Bear Health Check

Yesterday Kiona, our 16-year-old grizzly bear, had a physical exam here at SF Zoo. The exam, conducted by Zoo vet and animal care staff, included x-rays, blood work, a dental check, and nail trimming. We are proud to say that the 480-lb. female received a clean bill of health as a middle-aged bear coming out of her winter season! Kiona’s first activity after her exam was to eat a yummy snack - a pear. The rescued bear and her sister, Kachina, arrived here in 2004 after they were orphaned and deemed problem animals for straying too close to local residents. Make sure to stop by the daily 10:30 Grizzly Bear Feeding at Hearst Grizzly Gulch!
San Francisco's Other Painted Ladies

In San Francisco, the term “painted ladies” usually refers to the City’s multi-colored Victorian architecture. To naturalists, however, a painted lady is a multi-colored butterfly. The painted lady, Vanessa cardui, is amongst the most common butterflies seen in the Bay Area each spring. Not all years are the same, however. Especially heavy winter rains in Southern California can produce a “superbloom” of desert wildflowers, and a bumper crop of painted ladies. These butterflies migrate north by the millions, traveling about 25 miles an hour. This year’s superbloom migration has just started trickling into northern California. Most of these butterflies stick to the Central Valley, but a good number make their way to the coast. We are noticing increasing numbers traveling through SF Zoo and taking advantage of our nectar gardens! Here’s to our efforts of being a migratory “zoo”!
