Conservation is at the core of San Francisco Zoo and Gardens’ mission, and on this 13th annual Endangered Species Day, we seek to raise awareness about the more than 200 species listed as endangered or threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. The San Francisco Zoo and Gardens joins 236 other Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited institutions in investing more than $50 million annually to protect endangered species, some on the brink of extinction.
“Every time our guests walk through our gates, or support our conservation programs, it is an opportunity for us to connect and inspire them to be a part of a global effort to protect and save wildlife,” says Tanya M. Peterson, CEO and Executive Director of San Francisco Zoological Society. “As an organization, we continue to support and collaborate with other AZA zoos and aquariums, state and local agencies and conservation groups, and in the park itself, guests can see in-person many species whose wild counterparts are threatened. For us, every day is Endangered Species Day.”
Our Zoo has long been home to endangered species such as the black rhinoceros, whose population has decreased by more than 90% during the past 20 years; Sumatran tigers, whose estimated wild population is less than 679 individuals on the planet; and Bornean orangutans, a species that is returning to SF Zoo this year, which has suffered greatly from the effects of deforestation due to palm oil plantations.
You can support our conservation efforts on Endangered Species Day today by adopting an endangered animal such as a snow leopard, tiger, gorilla or rhino, through the Zoo’s Adopt-An-Animal (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=3ef2646354&e=7683a9aed3) program, or make a general donation to the Zoo’s conservation and wellness programs (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=cb13f99abf&e=7683a9aed3) . In commemoration of the Zoological Society’s 90th anniversary, the first 90 people to adopt an animal at the $100 level or above to support our conservation efforts will receive an additional surprise Adopt package as our “Thank You” for helping endangered species! Adopt online or in person at the Zoo’s Membership Office!
