Visit San Francisco Zoo & Gardens over Memorial Day Weekend to be among the first to get a sneak peek at our new Bornean orangutans. Our newly arrived pair, a nine-year-old male and a 16-year-old female, will be available for limited viewing both days in the new Orangutan Passage. Pictured here is Judy, looking out from the nearly 48-foot long and 14-foot high mesh-covered crossover passageway. Orangutans, one of Southeast Asia's keystone species, are in serious decline as their rainforest habitat is lost due to deforestation. The plight of wild orangutans is an important story for us to tell and we are thrilled to welcome the new pair to help connect guests to better understand and support this species efforts to survive.
The overall construction of our new Great Ape Passage (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=864eb37990&e=7683a9aed3) (GAP) is nearly complete! Back in November, the first construction phase of GAP opened, with our three senior chimps, Cobby, Minnie and Maggie settling into their new indoor dayroom and outdoor overhead passageway. Earlier this year, a new male joined the troop – 33-year-old male Gombus – the first new member since the passing of Tallulah in 2013, was successfully introduced to the long-time, tight-knit group. We invite you to come out this weekend to see our chimp troop in their expanded habitat and our new orangutans in the Orangutan Passage for limited viewing!

As we continue to celebrate SF Zoo’s 90th Anniversary, we are opening our gates an hour early on weekends in May, so you have more time to explore the Zoo’s gardens, which are as exotic as our animals! We’re even offering a free guided garden tour (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=b0c0589e7a&e=7683a9aed3) on weekend mornings at 9:30 am with paid admission or valid SF Zoo membership to help you explore!
Farewell Jahari

It is with deep sadness we announce that beloved male African lion, Jahari, has passed away. Jahari was born here at SF Zoo in 2003 to female Kita and sire Tunya and was lovingly hand-reared by Zoo staff after the passing of his mother. We watched this charismatic lion grow, mature and have a family of his own with his mate Sukari and becoming an admirable father to his offspring, Jasiri. Jahari was a favorite among guests and staff alike and will be remembered for his refined temperament and his bellowing roar that could be heard from every corner of the Zoo. He was an amazing ambassador of his species, irreplaceable as an individual and much loved over his 16 years at the Zoo.

The Koret Animal Resource Center (ARC) recently experienced “raptor renovations”. Through teamwork, visitors now can admire raptors in the newly renovated aviary located between the ARC and Fisher Family Farm. The aviary houses either our golden eagle or our Eurasian eagle owl, and they are both exploring the new perching and plantings in the space. Make sure to stop by the Exploration Zone to see the new renovations!
