Friends,
This Thanksgiving, on behalf of the entire staff of the Recreation and Park Department,
I'd like to take a moment to thank you for all you do for our City's parks.

While much is not right in our world, in San Francisco's parks all of us are equal
and equally welcome.  Whether you volunteer in, advocate for, or help fund our parks,
or you simply run, bike, hike, observe, reflect, garden, walk a dog, shoot a hoop,
kick a ball, or picnic, you bring our parks to life by fostering community that 
brings our City closer.
Our dedicated team - from our gardeners, custodians, park rangers and urban foresters,
to recreation leaders, lifeguards and park planners --  the heart and soul of our
department - are grateful and humbled to steward one of America's best urban park
systems right by your side each and every day.

We should also give thanks to our City's leadership for recognizing the value of
 parks.  Thanks to our Mayor, the Board of Supervisors, and our other elected leaders;
the Recreation and Park Commission; the Parks and Open Space Advisory Committee,
 our fellow city agencies; our labor groups, community organizations and non-profit
park partners like the San Francisco Parks Alliance and the Trust for Public Land
-- your leadership, support and collaborative spirit over the past year and beyond
has helped to make our parks more accessible, more relevant and more equitable for
San Franciscans.
This weekend, between turkey, shopping, football watching and napping, I invite 
all of you to #optoutside and enjoy our parks. Take a stroll, have a picnic or meet
your family and friends for a skate at Civic Center, Embarcadero Plaza or Union 
Square. Be sure to drop by the San Francisco Botanical Garden and Japanese Tea Garden
as well, as they will both be free on Thanksgiving Day.
And, on December 3, I invite you to join us for our 90th annual Holiday Tree Lighting
at McLaren Lodge in Golden Gate Park, where you'll enjoy sledding, carnival rides,
games, live entertainment and a visit from Santa.
Our parks are only as good as the people who use and support them. Thank you all
