Remembering Mark Bingham and Betty Ann Ong on September 11 Anniversary
In remembrance of September 11, 2001, we look at two local heroes from that fateful
day in American history who are commemorated at two of our city parks:
Mark Bingham grew up in the Bay Area and attended UC Berkeley where he played rugby.
He founded his own public relations firm that had recently expanded to New York
City and was on his way back for a wedding in San Francisco when he boarded United
Airlines Flight 93 on September 11. The flight was hijacked about 45 minutes after
takeoff and turned towards Washington D.C. Bingham led a group of passengers in
a revolt against the hijackers, forcing down the flight in rural Pennsylvania, 20
minutes away from D.C. and the potential targets of the White House or U.S. Capitol
building. Bingham was honored posthumously with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award for
his actions that day and SF Rec and Parks renamed the gymnasium at Eureka Valley
Recreation Center after him in 2002. Learn more about his story, courtesy of Cal
Varsity Rugby here [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001vI4elLIkP2ANvtyPdpE2oJyPH0JOQGomPKAh5l2CDoooRmqYmuWvaVEQMUrRIoh1M72uZw77QgjWSB17C-FhWBt5KcqpKdPkuW0EuWhoLfg2IcflyprZpDY5wb2QyduSr-nTB5ExK3o6S2cJeCvAKF_awBIQDMpq4cjQ-94WWIs=&c=qOfviK9iujqbuwXoR-X4R1DdHkQr5utBjHM-I3fciLNGNH0m8BpiJw==&ch=GihGG9HXI5j0z6du10uk98oQe70OeGp_IU0ne2ktqznHnsexpQZgDA==].
Betty Ann Ong was born and raised in San Francisco, growing up in Chinatown and
graduating from George Washington High School. She was a flight attendant on American
Airlines Flight 11 on September 11, the first flight hijacked. After the cockpit
had been taken, Ong placed a call to American Airline reservation agents, relaying
important information about the hijackers before the flight crashed into the North
Tower of the World Trade Center. Her call was the first warning that the United
States was under attack and it helped lead to the grounding of all flights across
the country. After a $21 million renovation in 2012, SF Rec and Park renamed Chinese
Recreation Center, where she grew up playing with her siblings, in her honor. Learn
more about her story, courtesy of KTVU Fox 2 and her brother, Harry Ong Jr. here
