A Message from Laurie Giammona
PG&E's Chief Customer Officer
Dear Valued Customer:
The last several days and nights have been a challenge as the state’s independent electric grid operator worked to forecast energy supplies during this record heatwave. Energy supply shortfalls required the grid operator to direct PG&E to conduct rotating outages last Friday and Saturday nights and to be on standby to potentially do so the past three nights.
In addition to rotating outages, some customers have experienced disruptions in service as some of our electrical equipment has been impacted by the excessive heat in some areas and storm damage in others.
As many of you are working and schooling from home, we know that any interruptions in electric service have significant impacts on your daily lives. We’re doing everything we can to avoid that while also being responsive to the state’s larger energy needs.
The last three days you’ve demonstrated incredible support for California’s call to conserve energy. Because of your actions to conserve, no rotating outages needed to be called by the state grid operator Sunday, Monday or Tuesday, and we are all thankful for that result.
Unfortunately, the possibility of energy shortages and rotating outages will likely remain with us through the rest of the week. This condition is not unique to PG&E. It is impacting other electricity providers in the state and almost all of their customers across California.
What You Can Do to Help
We appreciate the conservation actions you have taken these last several days. To minimize the possibility of these types of outages, we’re asking all Californians to continue to reduce power usage every day through Friday, August 21, especially from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.
You can do this by:
.;
adjusting your air conditioning thermostat to 78 degrees or higher;
.;
cooling your home to below normal levels in the morning and reducing your air conditioning during the afternoon hours;
.;
using a fan instead of air conditioning;
.;
drawing your window coverings;
.;
using large appliances less; and
.;
turning off unnecessary lighting.
Also, you can run your washing machine, dryer and dishwasher earlier in the day instead of the afternoon or evening. For more ways to conserve, visit
