Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Observation Wheel Temporarily Ceases Operations with SF in Purple Tier We’ve temporarily suspended operations of the SkyStar Wheel as of Sunday, November 29 after health officials announced San Francisco entered the state’s purple tier due to a surge of Covid-19 cases. The Conservatory of Flowers is also temporarily closed. The San Francisco Botanical Garden and Japanese Tea Garden remain open. All SkyStar Wheel ticket holders with reservations beginning Sunday, November 29 can reschedule their rides by visiting www.skystarwheel.com. The number one priority is public safety and stopping the spread of Covid-19. Together we will recover, and the observation wheel will be here waiting for us. Covid Resources Holidays in our Parks With the beginning of December, we have officially entered the holiday season! Though the holidays will look a lot different this year in our parks, we’re excited to have begun installing the new Entwined art installation in Peacock Meadow, as well as the traditional lights on Uncle John’s tree outside of McLaren Lodge this week. Entwined, by Charles Gadeken, will open to the public on Thursday, December 10. No tickets required! There will not be the traditional tree lighting event this year outside of McLaren Lodge, though the tree will illuminate the east entrance of Golden Gate Park as usual for the holiday season! 2020 Greenager Graduation Congratulations to our 2020 Greenagers, who graduated right before Thanksgiving in a virtual ceremony that featured District 10 Supervisor Supervisor Shamann Walton, Recreation and Park Commissioner Joe Hallisy, San Francisco Parks Alliance CEO Drew Becher, Port of San Francisco's Carol Bach, and more! The 22 graduates of this class completed 24 program days, visiting six local San Francisco parks and completing 963 volunteer hours. Thank you for all of your work and we look forward to you continuing to positively impact our parks and community! The Greenager Program is a youth stewardship and leadership program led in partnership with the Port of San Francisco. Teens play an important role in the community by improving the city’s green spaces, raising awareness, and creating place-based projects on issues participants value. For more information on the program, visit the Greenager program page. Greenager Program Page Summer Solutions Leadership Series This past month, 700 summer and out-of-school time leaders, advocates, policymakers, funders, and partners participated in the first-ever, virtual Summer Solutions Leadership Series, hosted by the National Summer Learning Association. Youth development professionals from across the country gathered virtually to share strategies on utilizing high-quality summer programs to close education, opportunity, and racial equity gaps for families and communities. This virtual conversation happened in lieu of the annual event that occurs at the National AIDS Memorial Grove in Golden Gate Park. 2020 marks 40 years since the first cases of AIDS were reported in the United States, a pandemic that has led to nearly 700,000 lives lost in this country, and that still has no cure. This pandemic is put into further context as our nation struggles through another one -- the fight against Covid-19.
