Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Light Installations in Golden Gate Park to go Dark for New Year's Eve As we prepare to say goodbye to 2020, we reflect on the coronavirus pandemic and the thousands of people who have lost their lives to the virus. Millions of healthcare workers are fighting each day to keep Americans alive and will continue to do so in 2021. To honor our healthcare heroes, as well as those lost in the past year, we will be turning off all of the holiday light exhibits in Golden Gate Park on New Year’s Eve. Be sure to do your part by celebrating this New Year’s Eve safely. Don't gather with other households. Wear a mask on essential outings. Keep physical distance. Wash hands often. Holidays at Home Additional Park Closures for New Year's Eve In addition to turning off the Golden Gate Park holiday light installations, we will be closing the following park features for New Year’s Eve: Ocean Beach parking lot (closes at 5 a.m. on December 31) Marina Green parking lots (closes at 6 p.m. on December 31) Stern Grove parking lot (closes at 6 p.m. on December 31) The gates to Twin Peaks off of Burnett Avenue and off of Portola Drive will remain closed to vehicle traffic for the evening of December 31 as well. These park features will reopen and resume normal operations on January 1, 2021 beginning at 5 a.m. while the Twin Peaks gates will resume opening to vehicle traffic in the evenings at 6 p.m. Local Contractor Approved for Cleanup of India Basin Shoreline One thing we're looking forward to in 2021? Getting to work on the future park site at India Basin! Earlier this month, the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department moved one step closer to rebuilding and restoring a thriving shoreline at India Basin. At the Recreation and Park Commission meeting for December, commissioners approved a construction contract with Rubecon Builders to remediate the 900 Innes Avenue site of the India Basin Park project. Set to break ground in Spring 2021, the cleanup efforts will restore a critical tidal marsh and wildlife habitat in the southeast corridor of San Francisco. This restoration is the first step in a plan to revitalize and unite a series of existing waterfront open spaces into a 10-acre seamless design. Once complete, it will provide unrivaled recreational access for 2,500 units of public and affordable housing, either existing or planned, within one mile of the future park.
