We would like to wish you all a happy, healthy and safe 4th of July. We will miss celebrating “Red, White and Zoo” with you in person and hope you take the time to commemorate the magnificent species that are in our own backyard.
>From our rescued grizzly and black bears in Bear Country, to the prairie dogs in the Exploration Zone and the river otters and bobcat in Cat Kingdom, San Francisco Zoo & Gardens is home to a wide variety of species that call North America home. These incredible ambassadors are critical to our ecosystem and help educate visitors about our country’s history and bring awareness to the challenges that they face in the wild.
Many of these species bring a message of hope, like our national bird, the bald eagle, which has had a rich history at SF Zoo. At the beginning of the 20th Century, bald eagles were hunted for sport, seen as a threat to livestock and fishing and poisoned by pollution. They were listed as Endangered with only 800 breeding pairs left in 1972. Under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, their population steadily recovered and in 2007 they were removed from the Endangered Species List! SF Zoo had a strong hand in this recovery with it's California Bald Eagle Breeding Program that began in 1985 and lasted over 20 years!
