Today’s Animail is one of commemoration and recognition, as we look back to some of our nation's darkest moments and look forward to change. We truly are in this together.
Acknowledging Juneteenth
Today’s recognition of Juneteenth is particularly important this year, and as an outdoor museum, San Francisco Zoo & Gardens joins its colleagues in educating visitors about the need for equality and respect for all. This weekend, consider watching the National Museum of African American History and Culture’s online event “Juneteenth: A Celebration Of Resilience (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=fa88c66bf0&e=7683a9aed3) ”– a two-day series of presentations and performances recognizing the significance of Juneteenth. As our shutdown period continues, this is an opportunity for us here at the Zoo to reflect upon this epic movement for basic human rights and how best to participate, both as individuals and as an institution.
The Longest Day of the Year
This Sunday, we ask that you expand your focus upon critically important human events to include those of the animal world. The pandemic has negatively impacted global tourism, giving poachers a leg-up over conservationists. Coinciding with Summer Solstice, June 21st is World Giraffe Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness for the tallest land animal on the longest day of the year. Giraffe populations have been declared extinct in 6 countries in Africa. The San Francisco Zoological Society sends a portion of the Zoo's operating revenue to trusted field organizations to help save these animals.
Honoring Dads
One of our most popular animals at the Zoo is Floyd the reticulated giraffe. Floyd is often seen peering at visitors from his favorite perch in the Roberts Family African Savanna. Floyd is also a proud father many times over, with his calves now living in zoos across the country. On behalf of all of our animal fathers, we want to wish dads everywhere a very Happy Father’s Day! When is the Zoo Re-Opening?
Finally, we know that all of you are anxiously awaiting word of when the Zoo and Gardens will be able to reopen. We thank our community, the Mayor, and especially the SF Board of Supervisors for its recent vote to include the Zoo in Phase 2 activities. As we work with our local public health agency, we are confident that we can open SF Zoo and Gardens in a safe, healthy outdoor environment.
We thank you for your participation in civic advocacy. From the local level of making the case for us to reopen to the global call for social and racial justice, we applaud each and every one of you for exercising your right to be an active, engaged citizen of the world.
