2020 Health and Recovery Bond Update
Thank you to everyone who supported the parks portion of the 2020 Health and Recovery
Bond today, June 24 at the Board of Supervisors' Budget and Finance Committee.
The 2020 Health and Recovery Bond is now one step closer to the November ballot.
Over the last few weeks we have worked alongside the Mayor's Office to address
the priorities of the Board of Supervisors. The identified park projects remain
unchanged, which include India Basin, Gene Friend Recreation Center, Herz Playground
Recreation Center, Buchanan Street Mall, and Japantown Peace Plaza. Amendments to
the bond proposal were mainly focused on program components. Supervisors made adjustments
to benefit improvements in Portsmouth Square, Jackson Park, South Sunset Playground,
and the Richmond Senior Center.
The next step will occur on Wednesday, July 8, with the Budget Committee hearing
the amended bond proposals.

Statues in Golden Gate Park
This past Friday night, statues of Junipero Serra, Francis Scott Key, and Ulysses
S. Grant in Golden Gate Park's Music Concourse were pulled down and defaced. There
was also widespread damage to this site at the heart of the park. Recreation and
Park staff worked through the night and into Saturday morning to remove statues,
paint over the graffiti and powerwash the area. By Saturday afternoon this treasured
green space was largely back to normal and teeming with visitors getting outside
as city residents continue to shelter in place. The statues are currently in storage
and are managed by the San Francisco Arts Commission
Mayor London Breed addressed the topic and has called upon the city to evaluate
our public art. We wanted to share part of her statement with you:
If we are going to make real change, let's do the work with our impacted communities
to make that change. To do that, I have asked the Arts Commission, the Human Rights
Commission, and the Recreation and Parks Department and its Commission to work with
the community to evaluate our public art and its intersection with our country's
racist history so that we can move forward together to make real changes in this
City. Who and what we honor through our public art can and should reflect our values.
SF Rec and Park is committed to making this change and we look forward to working
on the next steps.
