With 100 acres of greenery and dozens of “green,” environmentally-conscious programs, SF Zoo’s Shamrock Stroll (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=833b1da8ea&e=7683a9aed3) is an ideal place to Go Green this weekend as we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day! Follow along the self-guided tour spread throughout the Zoo to find lucky shamrocks featuring fun facts about our animals and get a history lesson on the Irish in our animals!  Enjoy "green" adult beverages (non-alcoholic also available) at Vineyard and Hops by Lemur Cafe 10:30 am - 4:00 pm.*

*SF Zoo is primarily an open outdoor space, and currently remains open. Nevertheless, we are responding to concerns arising from the coronavirus. We have increased sanitization stations and encouraged our staff to remain home if sick.  At this time,  our Zoo family remains healthy and resilient, and we wish the same for you and your family! Members of our SF Zoological Society are like family and deserve VIP treatment! This Saturday, we are inviting Zoo Members to join us before the Zoo’s gates open at 9:00 a.m. for a special “Members’ Appreciation Morning."  Not only do Zoo members receive free admission all year long, but this Saturday, Zoo Members can watch our wolverine wake up with an exclusive animal care staff talk at 9:30 a.m. and then take part in our Shamrock Stroll! New "Furniture" for Termites in Our Rainforest!

Can you believe that it has been nearly five years since the completely renovated South American Tropical Rainforest and Aviary exhibit re-opened? Amongst all the colorful birds and reptiles is a fascinating exhibit for one tiny but important invertebrate species—the Pacific dampwood termite. Termites play a key role in forest ecosystems by converting dead wood into useable nutrients. The termites here have been slowly but steadily working their way through the wood originally provisioned for them. It has taken nearly five years for them to consume all of the wood, and they were ready for fresh slabs. Recently, Zoo staff refurbished pieces of Monterey cypress and carefully installed the slabs into the Rainforest. Come check in on the termites, as they get started on their new woodworking project!
