All of us at the San Francisco Zoo and Gardens take great pride in our role as a community-focused organization.   Our education programs help young people learn about important issues from conservation to climate change, and our partnerships with other leading nonprofit organizations show how appreciation of wildlife impacts topics ranging from art to archaeology.

Today, we celebrate the international holiday of “Cinco de Mayo,” national Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and “Giving Tuesday” with our own special San Francisco Zoo twist:  “Cinco de Rhino!”

With the worldwide tourism shutdown due to the COVID 19 outbreak, wildlife parks across Asia and Africa have had to lay off park rangers due to the decline of international tourism, which pays ranger salaries.  As a result, rhino poaching has escalated sharply, with South Africa and Botswana national parks reporting at least one rhino being killed EVERY DAY since the COVID shutdown began.

“Cinco de Rhino” is our opportunity to share the plight of rhinos worldwide – and do something to support them!   In conjunction with the San Francisco Asian Art Museum, and in honor of Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month, both of our organizations are posting  social media highlighting the rhino,  from our Zoo rhinos Gauhati and Boone, to the Art Museum’s famed “Reina” – an ancient Chinese bronze statue that is the museum’s mascot.

We are also launching  a community Facebook fundraiser (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=35ef95eff6&e=7683a9aed3) in support of the International Rhino Foundation, which is working to stop the current COVID-related poaching activities.  For every donation received through the Zoo’s Facebook fundraiser – no matter how small – you will be entered into a random drawing to win the special prize of two rhino stuffed animals – one from the SF Zoo, and one of “Reina” from the Asian Art Museum!  All proceeds from this fundraiser will be sent directly to the International Rhino Foundation and Save the Rhino Trust.
