Memorial Day Weekend is Here!

During a traditional Memorial Day Weekend, you might be enjoying a weekend getaway, or staying closer to home and planning a local excursion. Here at the SF Zoo, Memorial Day is the traditional start to our summer programming, which we kick off with a three-day weekend BBQ and live music and entertainment. For decades, summer at the Zoo and Gardens has featured knowledgeable teen volunteers highlighting animals along the Nature Trail, presenting biofacts and activities during daily Talk on the Wild Side and our fascinating Wildlife Theater show starring our ambassador animals.

We know that this is not a normal year, and therefore, not a normal Memorial Day Weekend. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Zoo remains closed.   As we await governmental permission to re-open, we are actively making preparations to ensure the health and safety of our animals, staff, and visitors when we can welcome you back.

In anticipation of a re-opening soon, we wanted to share a beautiful video sent by a SF Zoo fan from the East Coast.   Please enjoy 7-year-old Sydney de Valle singing The Tokens’ “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” as filmed by Hayden del Valle, age 12, in New York City.  We were so surprised and delighted to receive this and wanted to share with all of you.

Thank you to everyone who has engaged with us on social media since the shutdown began.   Your words of encouragement, shared photos and memories, and generous financial contributions are testament to the important roles that we all hold in each other’s lives.
