It has been a whirlwind few weeks with the theft and subsequent recovery of our ring-tailed lemur Maki. With the COVID-19 pandemic and the height of the presidential campaign in full swing, who would have thought that a 10-lb. prosimian would enter the world’s consciousness and become the topic of virtual water coolers everywhere? Maki’s miraculous rescue is the stuff of screenplays, where a five-year-old James Trinh wound up being the one to catch sight of Maki, who had been abandoned by his abductors on a school playground.

On October 30, we celebrated World Lemur Day with a special Maki Day of Celebration. Special guests San Francisco Mayor London Breed and State Senator Scott Wiener joined me in giving accolades to young James, and longtime Zoo supporter and emeritus board member Barry Lipman shared his passion for being lead underwriter of the Zoo’s upcoming Madagascar Center. Barry underscored the importance of creating a major new exhibit which highlights the imperiled biodiversity of Madagascar, one of the world’s greatest and most at risk conservation hotspots. It was truly a perfect finale to a story that could have had a much different ending.

MAKI NEEDS YOU

Imagine how a five-year-old child had the foresight to recognize a ring-tailed lemur in his midst. That alone is quite a statement about the importance of preserving wild animals and wild places, and the role zoos have in educating our young about places like Madagascar, where 80% of its animals and plants are only found on this island off of Africa.

You can help support this multifaceted and exciting new project. Consider donating and thank you for all of your good wishes about Maki. We are grateful he is home safe, and thriving.
