If passed, the bond will include $239 million for park improvements, including: $101 million for neighborhood parks $18 million for citywide parks $86 million for recovery parks (parks that emphasize physical and mental health) $9 million for playgrounds $14 million for sustainability projects $6 million for the Community Opportunity Fund (smaller improvement projects) $1 million for trails $600,000 for Urban Agriculture sites The bond will benefit projects at India Basin, Gene Friend Recreation Center, Herz Playground, Buchanan Street Mall and Japantown Peace Plaza, as well as projects at Portsmouth Square, Jackson Park, South Sunset Playground and Richmond Senior Park. Learn More Margaret Hayward Playground Reopens Margaret Hayward Playground has reopened following a $28 million renovation that transformed the beloved 6-acre park in the heart of the Western Addition into a modern hub for recreation. The park’s transformation was funded largely by the San Francisco Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond approved by voters in 2012. Additional funding came from the Market and Octavia Community Improvement Fund, State Housing Related Parks Grant, Nearby Schools Initiative, and Open Space Funds. The renovation includes a redesigned layout that improves access and creates a unified and vibrant neighborhood park. At the heart of the park sits an all-new children’s play area as well as a community clubhouse with a teaching kitchen and room for expanded programming for seniors and youth. A plaza designed for multigenerational use doubles as a stage for neighborhood performances. At the east and west ends of the park are improved basketball courts, a new multi-use sports field to accommodate pick-up games, and two expanded baseball/softball fields converted to synthetic turf thanks to a $1.5 million donation from Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory. The Margaret Hayward renovation also features the first all-gender restrooms on a new park site. Learn More Margaret S. Hayward pioneered the establishment of public playgrounds in San Francisco and served as a charter member of the city’s playground commission. A native San Franciscan, Chalmers was also the principal of the Longfellow School from 1910 through 1938, when she retired. "Entwined" Light Art Display Coming to Golden Gate Park “Entwined,” a whimsical art installation by San Francisco artist Charles Gadeken, will transform Peacock Meadow in Golden Gate Park into an enchanted forest of otherworldly shapes and ever-changing light beginning December 1. The installation celebrates the park’s 150th anniversary and will run through February 2021, with a possible extension to June. The Entwined installation creates a colorful, lighted wonderland where visitors can explore paths and sit under a grove of three entwined sculptural trees while practicing social distancing. The trees range from 12 to 20 feet tall with illuminated canopies as large as 30 feet, filling the meadow with changing light. Sculptures comprised of 2,000 LED lights cluster into small flowering bushes at varying heights, further filling the green space with peaks and valleys of radiating light. The variety of lighting effects are inspired by nature and build a sense of awe: Raindrops on the pavement, lightning and thunderstorms, wind blowing tall grass and flowers, and ripples on a pond. Peacock Meadow sits in the park’s east end between McLaren Lodge and the Conservatory of Flowers and across from the new pop-up Welcome Center on JFK Drive.
