Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Friends, The holidays are a special time when we’re meant to take a break after a busy year and cherish our family and friends. In normal years, this would mean connecting with your brothers and sisters, your aunts and uncles, your relatives from all corners of the country – even the ones you may not always get along with. But 2020 has shown us that it is not a normal year. This Thanksgiving, though we find ourselves in the midst of a pandemic, there is still a lot we have to be thankful for. Whether you volunteer in, advocate for, or help fund our parks, or you simply run, bike, hike, observe, reflect, garden, walk a dog, you bring our parks to life by fostering community that brings our City closer. Our parks are only as good as the people who use and support them and we are grateful to you all. We are thankful to everyone who supported the City's Proposition A, which includes $239 million for park improvements such as projects at India Basin, Gene Friend Recreation Center, Herz Playground, Buchanan Street Mall and Japantown Peace Plaza, as well as projects at Portsmouth Square, Jackson Park, South Sunset Playground and Richmond Senior Park. The passage of this proposition will help shape our parks for the next decade. We are grateful for Golden Gate Park, which is celebrating its 150th birthday this year. Though it’s not the celebration we had planned, we think it’s fitting that the park that housed San Franciscans after the 1906 earthquake again became a refuge and outdoor escape while we navigate this global crisis. Though we will not be having our traditional holiday tree lighting at McLaren Lodge this year, we look forward to Entwined, a different type of tree lighting that will open December 10. We should also give thanks to our City's leadership, which has supported our parks through this pandemic and created one of the more successful response strategies to Covid in the country to date. Thanks to our Mayor, the Board of Supervisors, and our other elected leaders; the Recreation and Park Commission; the Parks and Open Space Advisory Committee, and our fellow city agencies including the Department of Public Health and Department of Emergency Management. In addition, thank you to our labor groups, community organizations and non-profit park partners like the San Francisco Parks Alliance and the Trust for Public Land -- your leadership, support and collaborative spirit over the past year and beyond has helped to make our parks more accessible, relevant and equitable for San Franciscans. Finally, I would like to thank the dedicated Recreation and Parks team. Staff has had to adapt to Covid by becoming emergency long-term childcare providers; increasing our cleaning schedules to keep San Franciscans safe; sending staff to fill emergency roles; and adding masks to everything we do and everywhere we go. From our gardeners, custodians, park rangers and urban foresters, to recreation leaders, lifeguards and park planners -- the heart and soul of our department - we are grateful and humbled by your sacrifice and dedication to ensure our parks are available and safe for all to use during these challenging times. Be sure to celebrate this Thanksgiving safely, and have a happy and healthy holidays.
