Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks "Entwined" Light Art Display Coming to Golden Gate Park “Entwined,” a whimsical art installation by San Francisco artist Charles Gadeken, will transform Peacock Meadow in Golden Gate Park into an enchanted forest of otherworldly shapes and ever-changing light beginning December 1. The installation celebrates the park’s 150th anniversary and will run through February 2021, with a possible extension to June. The Entwined installation creates a colorful, lighted wonderland where visitors can explore paths and sit under a grove of three entwined sculptural trees while practicing social distancing. The trees range from 12 to 20 feet tall with illuminated canopies as large as 30 feet, filling the meadow with changing light. Sculptures comprised of 2,000 LED lights cluster into small flowering bushes at varying heights, further filling the green space with peaks and valleys of radiating light. The variety of lighting effects are inspired by nature and build a sense of awe: Raindrops on the pavement, lighting and thunderstorms, wind blowing tall grass and flowers, and ripples on a pond. Peacock Meadow sits in the park’s east end between McLaren Lodge and the Conservatory of Flowers and across from the new pop-up Welcome Center on JFK Drive. More Info National First Responders Day Today is National First Responders Day! We’d like to take a moment to thank our wonderful Park Rangers, the dedicated men and women who work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, protecting our parks. In addition to responding to calls for service, Park Rangers spend time educating and getting to know the communities that they serve. Thanks for all you do! Take a Ride on the Wheel The wait is over! The 150-foot, illuminated Observation Wheel in Golden Gate Park is ready to ride. The wheel, which provides riders with sweeping views from the ocean to downtown San Francisco, celebrates Golden Gate Park’s 150th anniversary. Buy your tickets today! To prevent the spread of Covid-19, all reservations to ride must be made in advance. Riders must wear masks and practice social distancing. Each of the 36 fully enclosed, climate-controlled gondolas will be thoroughly cleaned between uses. Each gondola will be shared only by people in the same household. The Observation Wheel is located in the Music Concourse, the outdoor plaza near the de Young Museum, the California Academy of Sciences, and the Japanese Tea Garden. Purchase Tickets SF Chronicle: One Happy Story As much as 2020 has been a real bummer, here's a story that's sure to warm the hearts of even the most jaded and cynical. Earlier this month, our department received an email from a gentleman who wanted to take the opportunity to propose to his girlfriend on the Golden Gate Park Observation Wheel, which was installed earlier this year to mark the park's 150th anniversary, but just recently began turning after delays due to COVID-19. The gentleman, 33-year-old Kevin Dublin, a local teacher and computer coder, is also a poet and a hopeless romantic, and so, Rec and Park staff helped facilitate what is arguably the most heartwarming story of the year-- a marriage proposal in the heart of iconic Golden Gate Park, atop a 150-foot-tall observation wheel with sweeping views of the city, complete with a ring, a poem and a throng of eager family and friends waiting below. You had me at 'observation wheel.' Read the SF Chronicle story Celebrate Halloween Safely Have a spooky but safe Halloween this weekend! Avoid COVID-19 by doing activities at home with your family.
