New Kudu Calves!
We are excited to announce the birth of two new kudu calves. One male was born on August 15 to mother "Carmela" and one female was born on August 22 to mother "Madison." They are both growing strong and healthy under their respective mothers care. Greater kudu are one of the tallest and most striking antelopes and are native to southern and eastern Africa. Males can weigh up to 700 pounds and are adorned with spectacular long, spiraling horns and a beard while females are noticeably smaller and will only occasionally have small horns. Be sure to keep an eye out for our growing herd in the Roberts Family African Savanna!

Give your old sheets a new life!

One of our beloved Bornean orangutan pair's favorite enrichment items are bed sheets, which they use to build nests and carry around with them. Our chimps also love sheets to create comfy sleeping nests. Due to natural wear and tear, we have gone through our entire supply of sheets. In an effort to reuse materials, we are asking our community to donate any old linens to the Zoo. If you have some excess sheets that you are ready to part with, or wish to make a cash donation to help purchase new sheets, please contact development at sfzoo.org (mailto:development at sfzoo.org) to facilitate your donation. All donations are fully tax-deductible.

Each year our Magellanic penguins lose their old feathers as new ones grow in. During this process, which lasts from mid-July through mid-October, our penguins tend to fast and stay on land as they are not waterproof. They will gain around 30% of their normal body weight, release current feathers, and regenerate new feathers, all in a period of about 3-4-weeks. We are proud to maintain the largest and most successful breeding colony of Magellanic penguins under human care since 1985!
