Community Hubs Across the City Open to Help Support City Kids
Sounds of laughter returned to the newly renovated Merced Heights Playground (above)
this week as kids tested out the park's new playground equipment. The park is one
of 45 community hubs that opened across the city on Monday in partnership with San
Francisco Department of Children, Youth & Their Families (DCYF), the San Francisco
Public Library, HOPE SF, the
Department of Homelessness & Supportive Housing, the Mayor's Office of Housing and
Community Development, the Human Services Agency, and many more community partners.
The Community Hub Initiative is a neighborhood-based strategy to support children,
youth, and families during the school year. The hubs provide support for students
in grades K-6 who are utilizing SFUSD's distance learning curriculum, and prioritize
children and youth with the highest need.

San Francisco High School Writers Win Coveted Fracchia Prize
Congratulations to the 2020 Fracchia Prize winners! Winnie Quock, Indigo Mudbhary,
and Luke Zepponi took first, second, and third place respectively for their historical
guided walking tours of Golden Gate Park in honor of the park's 150th birthday.
The prize, named after San Francisco Historical Society founder Charles Fracchia,
recognizes San Francisco high school students who demonstrate excellence in original
writing about San Francisco history. This year, the Historical Society invited students
to create a guided walking tour of a section of Golden Gate Park in honor of the

including Washington, Lowell, Lincoln, Saint Ignatius, Balboa, Lick-Wilmerding,

Virtual Lecture Series: Sydney Stein, GGP's First Female Gardener
On Thursday, September 17 at 6 p.m., San Francisco  Heritage and the Western Neighborhoods
Project will continue their online women-focused lecture series programs with "Sydney
Stein: Golden Gate Park's First Woman Gardener."
2020 marks the 150th anniversary of San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, and the lecture
will explore one of the park's beloved unsung heroes, Sydney Stein, who, in 1929
 became the first woman hired as a gardener by the City of San Francisco.
Nicole Meldahl, Executive Director of the Western Neighborhoods Project, will recount
some of the specific initiatives Stein accomplished, such as saving tulips from 
Europe immediately before World War II, and Stein's ascendance to chief nurseryman
(or should we say, nurseryWOman?) and eventually manager of the Conservatory of 
Flowers.

SF Shakespeare Festival Livestream Shows in September
For almost 40 years, San Francisco Recreation and Parks has partnered with the San
Francisco Shakespeare Festival to offer free Shakespeare in the Park. Traditionally,
these shows have taken in place in iconic settings such as Golden Gate Park and 
Jerry Garcia Amphitheater but have gone virtual for 2020. Be sure to tune in for
 live free virtual productions of King Lear every Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday 
at 4 p.m. through September 27, with a special Labor Day performance at 4 p.m. on
September 7.  Our bison webcams offer a rare opportunity to observe the all-female herd as five
longtime residents - Betsy, Bailey, Bellatrix, Buttercup, and Bambi - get to know
their five young roommates, 1-year-olds acquired in March in honor of Golden Gate
Park's 150th anniversary. Among the youngsters is Sesqui, a bison named for the 
park's sesquicentennial who sports an ear tag number of 150.
