Remembering Jim Ludwig
All of us at the Zoological Society mourn the loss of our beloved Jim Ludwig on September 7th. In addition to the myriad other accomplishments Jim achieved during his 95 years, he served a record-setting 65 years as a board member of the Zoo. During that illustrious tenure, Jim served as the Zoological Society’s President, Chairman, and Vice-Chairman; was a two-time honoree at the annual ZooFest gala; tirelessly raised funds for signature capital exhibits like the Roberts Family African Savanna and Fisher Family Children’s Zoo; and led four society safari trips to Africa. Reflecting Jim’s love of animals, SF Zoo named a penguin, “Ludwig,” its innovative capital project, “Jim Ludwig Great Ape Passage,” and, most recently, a Kudu calf named, “Jim.”

Jim is survived by his wife Patricia Settle Dobos Ludwig; daughters Jessica (Raymond), Nicole (Robert), Lisa (Andrew); stepsons Theodore (Stacey) and Matthew; and their children. We are deeply honored that the family has asked for memorial contributions to be made to the James L. Ludwig Memorial Fund at the Zoo. If you wish to make a contribution, please contact Timothy Wu at timw at sfzoo.org (mailto:timw at sfzoo.org) or you may send a donation via mail attention to Mr. Wu at San Francisco Zoological Society, 1 Zoo Road, San Francisco, CA, 94132-1098.

Earlier this month, 34 turtles that were raised here at San Francisco Zoo & Gardens were released in the Redwood Creek Watershed and Rodeo Valley Watershed in the Marin Headlands. This is the first time that turtles have been back in Rodeo Lagoon in over 20 years! For the fourth year in a row, Golden Gate National Park Service, The San Francisco Zoo, Point Reyes National Park Service, and Sonoma State University all worked together to make this turtle release possible.
