Smaller, Shorter and Smarter PSPS Events

We know how disruptive it is to be without power, especially during COVID-19 when many people are working and learning from home. Our focus this year has been on reducing the number of customers affected by Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) events and shortening the length of time power is off.

First PSPS Event in 2020



PG&E's most important responsibility is the safety of our customers and communities. Since the PSPS events in 2019, our teams have worked hard every day to reduce both wildfire risks and the impacts of PSPS events. During the first PSPS event of 2020 earlier this month, we restored power within 12 daylight hours and the event was approximately 50% smaller than it would have been last year. 
 

In addition, following the first PSPS event, we identified more than 80 instances of weather damage and hazards, such as downed lines and vegetation on power lines. If these lines had been energized during the severe weather event, the damage we identified could have caused an ignition.

We were able to make the PSPS event smaller in size using improved weather forecasting and temporary generation to reduce the number of customers affected by this event. More than 70,000 customers who would have lost power were kept energized – including critical facilities such as hospitals – due to temporary generators at our substations and microgrids, and the Humboldt Bay Generating Station. We will continue to make improvements that will reduce the impacts of PSPS events on our customers.
