Easter is this weekend and we are celebrating with the most recent members of Tonka's Troop, our ostriches. Did you know that ostrich eggs are the largest in the world, yet the smallest in relation to the size of the adult bird? One ostrich egg is egual to about 24 chicken eggs! ZOO HIGHLIGHTS

A number of California pipevine swallowtail butterflies (Battus philenor) have been seen flying around the butterfly gardens and laying eggs at SF Zoo & Gardens. This species had largely disappeared from SF, but has become more common in recent years as naturalists have reintroduced its native foodplant, CA pipevine (Aristolochia californica).This spectacular butterfly is large, and flashes brilliant iridescent blue hind wings when the sun refracts off its scales. Spring is a great time for SF Zoo visitors to see a variety of local species!

On March 29, 1998, eleven Mexican gray wolves, reared under human care, were released to the wild after missing from the southwestern landscape for over 30 years. This Lobo Week marks the 23rd anniversary of this significant milestone!
