If you have been by Penguin Island in the last few months, you may have noticed a platform with ramps and safety walls. Our penguins have been in training for several months to walk onto the platform so we can obtain weights voluntarily. With 55 individual Magellanic penguins, our penguins have different and distinct personalities that need to be considered throughout the training process. Luckily, our team knows each individual penguin and use their knowledge to help each one progress at their level of comfort. The penguins also learn by watching each other. Seeing each other on the scale helps build the confidence of the birds that are more cautious. We recently added the scale and got our very first voluntary weights!

>From 1985 to 2007, San Francisco Zoo & Gardens’ Bald Eagle Recovery Project helped to re-establish the California bald eagle, a species on the brink of extinction, to the Channel Islands and Santa Cruz Island. The conservation program, which ultimately released 103 bald eagles, served as the only large-scale captive breeding program for bald eagles in the U.S. This week, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife report announced that populations of the American bald eagle have quadrupled since 2009, with more than 71,400 nesting pairs. We’re extremely proud of our role in this conservation success story and look forward to continue our work saving species!

Our youngest female mandrill turned one on April 4! When we reopened, older brother Kiburi helped bring her out of her shell because she was not used to people being around. Now you can see them playing a lot together.
