ZOO HIGHLIGHTS

SF Zoo & Gardens is home to several rescued pelicans who cannot fly in the wild due to injury and contamination. Recently, they were moved into our former marine mammal therapeutic pool, usually used for injured seals and sea lions. Now empty, the pool provides the pelicans, ranging in age from 5 to 31 years, easier access to animal care visits and wellness training for medical procedures. SF Zoo & Gardens proudly boasts one of the greatest percentages of rescued animals in any accredited U.S. zoo!

Every year, our African crowned cranes are given physical exams to assess their health. Veterinarians check their vision, listen to their hearts and lungs and check their feet. The birds also receive “pedicures” and vaccinations. It takes a complete team to accomplish these tasks. For some procedures, as many as three people (with face coverings) may hold the bird while animal wellness team members collect the needed health measures!
