ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
While humans shed millions of skin cells every day, snakes naturally shed an entire layer of their skin 6 to 12 times per year. When the snakes at the zoo shed their skin, keepers save it for some of our carnivores who love to play with it. The meerkats love to rub on it, smell it, munch on it, and drag it around. Who knew snake skins could be so much fun?

Did you know that Aldabra tortoises are important pollinators? In their native habitat, Aldabra tortoises play a role similar to that of elephants in their homelands – they eat brush, small trees and shrubs, which alters the landscape. They also disperse seeds in their droppings, starting new growth and providing food for other animals.
Learn more about these members of Tonka's Troop on our website (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=04690e89fb&e=7683a9aed3) where you can download a fact sheet and collectible card featuring our tortoises!
CONSERVATION HIGHLIGHTS
In 2015, 56 juvenile Western pond turtles reared here at the Zoo were released in the Presidio’s Mountain Lake in San Francisco following years of habitat restoration. This week the first confirmed hatchling from that group of head-started turtles was found at the lake! This tiny turtle is the beginning of a new generation of wild turtles in the Presidio. It is exciting to have confirmation that the zoo-reared turtles are healthy and breeding successfully in their restored habitat in the heart of San Francisco!
