ZOO HIGHLIGHTS

Follow Tonka on his adventures through San Francisco Zoo & Gardens as he introduces us to our Bornean orangutan duo, Berani and Judy.  While Judy is naturally playful and curious, Berani is more reserved until he is comfortable, then he is engaging and boisterous. Stay tuned for more as we celebrate World Orangutan Day on August 19!

Bruce, our 11-year-old male Nile hippopotamus, will be leaving in early September to breed with a female hippo at another accredited zoo. Until then, we hope you will find time to see him one last time! Bruce has been a fan favorite and delightful ambassador of his species since he arrived here in 2011 as a "rescue". There’s still time to come visit him and say farewell before his departure. While he will be dearly missed, we look forward to seeing him become a father someday!

As COVID cases rise in San Francisco, we want to give you all a friendly reminder that reservations (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=9bced7a176&e=7683a9aed3) are still required for a visit. We also require masks to be worn indoors, while waiting in a line, and when near our sensitive animals. Thank you for your support as we continue to navigate these difficult times!

On weekdays, starting Monday, August 16, access to SF Zoo via the Great Highway will be much easier. During weekdays, the Great Highway between Lincoln Way and Sloat Blvd. will reopen to car traffic. Note that the road will close to vehicles on weekends and holidays, when pedestrians and bicyclists have access for recreational use. Vehicle closure times are Fridays at 12:00 noon until Monday at 6 a.m. When the Great Highway is closed, please use the Zoo's entry on Sloat Blvd. Thank you!
CONSERVATION HIGHLIGHT

On August 10, we celebrated World Lion Day. African lions are one of the most iconic animals on Earth and they face a huge crisis. With only 20,000 remaining, we must come together to protect lion populations. By protecting lions, we are also protecting the health and well-being of landscapes, wildlife and communities who live alongside them.

Last weekend, we hosted our annual March of the Penguins event and it was a huge success! Lemon and David, two new, male penguin chicks, waddled to their new home on Penguin Island to join the rest of the penguin colony.
